We are looking for an experienced, motivated, and highly technical manager to lead the ML engineering team that delivers the next generation of end-user intelligence features for international locales across multiple platforms (iOS, macOS, watchOS, etc).
You will be a creative, motivated, leader with excellent communication skills who is passionate about Apple’s products and the international customer experience. As a hands-on engineering manager, you possess the deep technical fluency required to step into the role of your engineers if needed, yet you can also easily step out to see the big picture. You bring a robust understanding of large language models (LLMs), internationalization, Apple software, models, and frameworks, combined with the people skills required to mentor, grow, and empower a high-performing engineering team.
Description
In this Engineering Manager role, you will lead a phenomenal team of talented ML engineers to build and evaluate international features, processes and tooling across a wide variety of Apple’s products.
We are looking for an exceptional candidate to architect the future of international intelligence features while growing the engineers who will build it. Your role is to define the strategic bigger picture, manage the day-to-day execution, and ensure we build features that surprise and delight our international customers, all while remaining technically close enough to write code, review architectures, and prototype alongside your team.
Your duties include:
- Recruiting, managing, and mentoring a high-performing team of International Engineering Leads and Applied ML Engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and psychological safety.
- Acting as a hands-on technical leader, capable of architecting solutions, writing code, training models, and stepping into IC roles as needed to unblock the team and drive projects forward.
- Defining the strategic roadmap and driving the internationalization of Apple’s intelligence features in close partnership with your team and cross-functional feature partners.
- Conducting regular 1-on-1s, guiding career development, and providing actionable feedback and coaching to help your engineers grow and multiply their impact.
- Guiding your ML Engineers in the exploration and application of Large Language Models (LLMs) for performing localization and internationalization tasks and tooling.
- Regularly assessing feature internationalization readiness and progress, and reviewing statistical evaluation results to drive improvements across locales.
- Authoring crisp weekly executive status reports, and representing the international engineering team in senior leadership meetings.
- Advocating for the international customer and international ML best practices in recurring cross-functional and leadership meetings.
- Facilitating communication between your team, project managers, and feature teams to seek efficiencies and drive shared best practices, tooling, and data between intelligence features.
- Engaging deeply in all aspects of intelligence feature engineering alongside your team-from ideation, prototyping, training, experimentation, and statistical evaluation, to functional on-device qualification and shipping.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience managing a blended team of Software Engineers and Machine Learning Engineers/Researchers.
Deep experience in software localization / internationalization at scale.
Experience adapting pre-trained LLMs for downstream tasks and deploying them to production.
Experience using GenAI to prototype solutions and data sets.
Familiarity with localization standards and technologies (Unicode, XLIFF, ICU, etc.).
Native-level foreign language skills in reading, writing and speaking.
Knowledge of Computational Linguistics.
Experience using Xcode to build software for Apple’s platforms.
Proficiency with Apple’s development APIs (SwiftUI, Foundation, etc.).
Deep understanding of languages and culture outside your own.
Minimum Qualifications
BS, MS or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Machine Learning (or equivalent experience).
Proven experience managing, mentoring, and growing software engineering or applied machine learning teams.
Demonstrated ability to act as a hands-on technical manager with strong programming skills in Python, Swift, C or C++, capable of performing rigorous code and architecture reviews.
Experience leading large cross-functional software engineering projects that have significant international impact.
Deep technical experience with Machine Learning (ML), with a particular emphasis on Large Language Models (LLMs)
Proven ability to understand, interpret, and apply cutting-edge research to consumer-oriented products, and to guide your team in doing the same.
High emotional intelligence (EQ) with strong people management skills
Experience influencing cross-functional and cross-cultural partners at multiple levels of an organization, including senior leadership.
