Job description

What You'll Do: 

  • Plans, directs, and evaluates all medical services within the correctional institution.
  • Establishes, implements, and evaluates medical programs. 
  • Reviews and updates current programs.
  • Develops, administers, and enforces policy and procedures.
  • Develops and implements institutional nursing policy and procedure manual.
  • Prepares nursing budget with input from medical staff.
  • Serves as nursing liaison with other units in institution to ensure services are coordinated.
  • Directs public relations activities.
  • Directs and manages use and maintenance of inmate electronic health care records.
  • Coordinates nursing services with other patient services.
  • Conducts and/or attends health care meetings.
  • Provides leadership for quality assurance functions (ex. ACA audit standards).
  • Submits and/or approves requisitions for medical supplies and/or equipment.
  • Works with advanced level providers to assure adequate medical care for inmates.
  • Documents and/or reviews in the electronic heath record documentation.
  • Supervises permanent employees and agency/contract medical staff (e.g., RN’s, LPN’s, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, medical records & dental)
  • Approves/disapproves leave requests and completes and signs performance evaluations and handles disciplinary problems.
  • Schedules work assignments and reviews and evaluates completed work.
  • Recruits, interviews, and recommends applicants for hire, trains, and orients new employees and agency staff.
  • Develops and provides medical staff training and education.
  • Serves on institution committees
  • Investigates and responds to inquiries about healthcare concerns raised by inmates, families, and other interested parties
  • Monitors healthcare services compliance with state and federal regulations, standards and court orders and report findings.
  • Provides direct professional nursing care to inmates
  • Administers emergency care and first aid to inmates and staff.
  • Assesses inmate patients and administers medications during absence of nursing staff or as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Requires current licensure as registered professional nurse in state of Ohio as issued by Board of Nursing per Section 4723.03 of Ohio Revised Code; 24 mos. exp. as registered nurse; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in counseling; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in interviewing; 3 courses or 9 mos. exp. in public relations; 3 courses or 9 mos. exp. in employee training & development; 6 courses or 18 mos. exp. in management.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated licensure.
