What Is a Role Player?

A role player is a professional who helps military personnel test out tactical training exercises. Role players may be assigned to travel to different military sites to re-enact training exercises. Role players are usually provided with a script or scenario that they must follow to participate in these training exercises.

How to Become a Role Player

One of the key steps toward becoming a successful Role Player is physical fitness; you’ll need to be in optimal shape to meet the highly active duties the position demands in potentially various terrains and weather conditions. You’ll also need to work on your acting skills; most employers seek candidates with some prior experience performing. Because Role Players are employed for military training scenarios, familiarity with military or law enforcement is also a helpful asset. Some military employers may prefer that you have prior experience conducting pre-mission training and Role Playing combat. To apply for these roles, plan to submit a resume that demonstrates your physical aptitude and relevant experience; a headshot is sometimes requested as well. In some cases, be prepared to pass a vision test and background check, and some positions even require a security clearance.

How to Be a Good Role Player

A role player acts out realistic tactical scenarios to aid in military training. A good role player sticks to a consistent exercise regimen to maintain optimal physical health and ensure that they can keep up with the rigorous physical demands of the role. A good role player also has basic tactical training knowledge and can endure unpredictable working conditions. Role players who can follow directions well and provide clear, constructive feedback about each tactical exercise, tend to be most successful in the role.
