What Is a Music Consultant and How to Become One

What Does a Music Consultant Do?

As a music consultant, your duties are to guide a musical artist to success. You help them create a plan for their career, coach them on performing, and even help with the recording process. While your responsibilities are vast, the main concentration of your efforts is in marketing. You levy your connections and funds to promote an artist, gaining them enough popularity to receive a return on your investment. You often work with emerging artists who have the necessary talent but lack the means to reach a broader audience. Your job is to represent, promote, advise, and market the artists with whom you work.

How to Become a Music Consultant

There are no specific qualifications to become a music consultant. You do not need a degree or certification. There are no classes for the position or any online training programs. Instead, you should acquire a bachelor’s degree in marketing or communications. The skills you need revolve around marketing, client management, and public relations. Previous experience in the music industry helps, but your connections and funds make or break your career. You need enough money to advertise and promote an artist. However, money is not enough. You also need connections with producers and venues and the ability to create a strong social media presence.
