What Is a Metal Fabricator?
A metal fabricator’s job is to weld pieces of metal, such as steel or iron, and assemble the various parts into a finished product. Also known as boilermakers, a metal fabricator’s duties also include creating molds, making metal castings, and applying a finish or coating to metal before it ships from the shop to its final destination. A metal fabricator must be able to read technical specs and blueprints and execute the proper welding to meet those specifications. Some fabrications are performed using specialized welding machinery and computer programs, while other jobs require metal fabricators to work by hand.
How to Become a Metal Fabricator
You must meet several qualifications to begin your career as a metal fabricator. Most employers require a high school diploma or GED certificate. Completing post-secondary studies at a vocational or technical school is also helpful. Many metal fabricators join an industrial apprenticeship program where they can gain skills and experience on-the-job while also receiving special technical education, such as how to use computer fabrication software and welding equipment. You may also gain certifications to demonstrate your ability in a specific area of welding, such as heavy welding or machine welding. Being knowledgeable about how various metals interact is also beneficial for this career.
