What Is a Cmm Technician and How to Become One

What Is a CMM Technician?

A CMM technician operates a coordinate measuring machine (CMM), which is used in factory production to take precise measurements for welders and other mechanics. In this career, your job duties are to consult with clients about blueprints and schematics for a product and use the CMM machine to ensure that the measurements are to the exact specifications before manufacturing the product. Qualifications for a career as a CMM technician include a high school diploma or GED certificate and experience with AutoCAD and other programming software that is used to calibrate the machine. You also need excellent mechanical skills.

How to Become a Cmm Technician

To obtain a job as a CMM technician, you need a high school diploma or equivalent and mechanical aptitude. Some choose to complete a technical certificate program from a vocational school or earn an associate degree from a community college to learn how to use industry-related machinery and proper safety protocols, but many employers provide on-the-job training to new CMM technicians. You need to know how to read blueprints and other plans, as well as have an understanding of safety and operating procedures for using and maintaining CMM machinery and other tools. Before starting work, you may be required to pass a background check and a drug test.
