Job Description
The Office of Legal Affairs at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is charged with the responsibility of protecting the resources of the university medical center. The Insurance Division, which is a division of the Office of Legal Affairs, manages and administers the University Self Insurance Program (USIP) with respect to its professional liability risks through underwriting, risk financing, consultation, and data analysis.
The Insurance Specialist provides operational and technical support to the Insurance Division and Senior Assistant Vice President and Senior Director of Insurance for the medical professional liability self-insurance program. Working collaboratively with internal and external parties - including physicians, attorneys, risk management, litigation team, and credentialing - the position supports effective risk assessment and insurance operations.
The Insurance Specialist reviews and evaluates medical professional liability insurance applications to support underwriting and risk assessment decisions. Responsibilities include independently planning and managing assigned workload and exercising sound judgement, within established guidelines, to determine application completeness and prepare files for progression to the next level of review. The role requires the ability to assess application data, prepare clear and professional technical communications, respond to applicant questions, and request outstanding information as needed. The position monitors the risk management information system dashboards to prioritize work and escalate matters appropriately.
The Insurance Specialist investigates multiple information sources and independently prepares verifications of insurance coverage for external parties. This position coordinates the Risk Management Committee meetings and communicates with hospital leadership, physicians and staff. The preparation of technical and confidential materials, along with strong written and verbal communications skills, is essential components of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Two (2) years of relevant experience. This position will require a person with good organizational skills, sound judgment, and reason. This position requires the ability to: Communicate effectively with others through written and spoken language; Organize and manage documents and other work materials; Attention to details and accuracy; PC literate, including Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Prioritize and work on multiple projects at same time; Ability to work in a team environment.
