Job Description

POSITION:                         Nurse Manager (Sonography experience)

                                           Regular, non-exempt, part-time position (typically, 20-25 hours per week).

POSITION SUMMARY:   Under the general supervision of the Medical Director and in cooperation and coordination with the Executive Director, the Nurse Manager oversees all aspects of the medical services at SouthWest Options for Women (SWOW); performs direct and indirect nursing interventions; and serves as a Client Advocate (including lay counseling and pregnancy and STI testing, when requested by client).  The Nurse Manager will maintain a respectful, helpful, working relationship with all SWOW staff and volunteers and will help fulfill the mission of SWOW by utilizing the most current factually accurate information and striving always to become more proficient in each of our service areas. 

SUPERVISION:                  Executive Director of SouthWest Options for Women 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.                Provides support and care to SWOW clients and maintains professional standards of care.

2.                Under the general supervision of the Medical Director and in cooperation and coordination with the Executive Director, is responsible for supervising, organizing, planning, assessing and monitoring all medical services provided by SWOW.

3.                Works in conjunction with physicians, Nurse Managers, and client advocates to ensure that patients are receiving the best medical care.

4.                Develops, maintains, reviews and updates clinic policies and procedures with Medical Director and Executive Director.

5.                Provides nursing care: assesses patient needs and makes nursing judgments that reflect safe nursing practices.

6.                Conducts ultrasounds in accordance with current standing orders.

7.                Performs pregnancy and STI testing as needed.

8.                Provides education for patient and family to develop an understanding of their health condition.

9.                Assists physician with treatments as needed.

10.             Oversees patient follow-up per patient care plan and standardized procedures.

11.             Serves as a Client Advocate, providing options education and support to clients, utilizing the most current factual information and being proficient regarding the following topics or issues:

a)      Options Pregnancy counseling

b)     Post-abortion knowledge of resources

c)      Basic pregnancy health-related issues

d)     Using sexual risk avoidance

e)     Contraception (birth control) methods and their effects

f)       Natural Family Planning and Fertility Awareness

g)      Sexually Transmitted Infections and Diseases (STIs and STDs)

h)     All other educational resources available to clients.

12.             Assures compliance with infection control and other safety guidelines, including OSHA requirements.

13.             Assures accurate records and care plans, follows through on physician’s orders, and maintains current HIPAA compliance. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS CONT.:

14.             Helps to educate the staff in medical policies and procedures and overall health information pertaining to our client base.

15.             Ensures that accurate records and medical charting is completed for all clients following SWOW’s established charting protocols.

16.             With the Client Services Manager, oversees client follow-up and charting practices for quality control.

17.             Maintains a working knowledge of nursing methods, principles and practices in relation to the prevention and treatment of disease, safety and infection control, clinical systems, and supplies and equipment.

18.             Maintains medical license and appropriate in-service training for MN.

19.             Maintains a respectful, helpful, working relationship with all SWOW staff, volunteers, board members and the Medical Director.

20.             Respects and maintains confidentiality at all times.

21.             Complies with the SWOW Employee Handbook and all other SWOW Policies and Procedures, and all laws, rules, regulations, standards and best practices appropriate to the position.

22.             Takes the role of authority in the absence of the Executive Director. 

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.      Communicates as needed with Executive Director, and meets regularly to evaluate and manage policies, procedures, and/or medical or client services.

2.      Assists Executive Director and Client Services Manager in training new advocates/volunteers. Oversees training and orientation of the clinic medical volunteers.

3.      Compiles SWOW medical data/statistics regularly and submits to Executive Director or others as requested.

4.      Maintains sufficient medical supplies within the established budget as outlined by the Executive Director.

5.      Assists Executive Director in fundraising and marketing duties as assigned.

6.      Represents the Clinic in the community as delegated by the Executive Director.

7.      Attends medical conferences that offer professional training and information pertinent to the clinic’s practices.

8.      Increases knowledge of management, obstetrical and gynecological care and women’s health issues.

9.      Networks with other pro-life medical professionals and attends appropriate local pro-life meetings or

10.   conferences if possible.

11.   Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.      Agreement with our Values and Approach: Commitment to carrying out the pro-life Mission, Values and Vision of SWOW in particular: no abortion referrals, no contraceptives dispensed or advocated, chastity promoted.  Must exhibit a strong commitment and dedication to the sanctity of all human life and to sexual purity.  Must agree with and be willing to uphold the Mission Statement and all SWOW Policies and Procedures.

2.      Professional: Registered Nurse Manager (RN) with current licensure, current certification in sonography; experience in Obstetrics preferred. 

3.      Must maintain professional liability insurance with minimum limits of $1 million/claim and $3 million aggregate.

4.      Exhibits strong interpersonal, organizational and communication stills, and possesses basic computer skills and knowledge. 

QUALIFICATIONS CONTINUED:

5.      Education: Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and/or related experience preferred, minimum of associate degree required; National Institute of Family and Life Advocates’ (NIFLA) Limited Obstetrical Ultrasound Course or equivalent, required oversight scans, and required certification courses.  Preferred: experience with pregnancy resource centers, counseling, social services, family services, and/or previous non-profit education and/or experience.

6.      Personal: Able to empathize with those in distress and give practical assistance; strong counseling and active listening skills.  The ability to navigate stairs and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

7.      Relational: Ability to work as a team member and to accept responsibility.  Ability to act independently and to seek consultation when needed.

TRAINING - SWOW will provide the following on an initial and on-going basis (as needed):

1.      Orientation to SWOW and on-the-job training with the Executive Director, Client Services Manager, and Medical Director.

2.      Training and materials necessary to serve as a Client Advocate, including topics listed above needed to provide factually accurate lay counseling to clients.

3.      Training and materials regarding all SWOW Medical Services, Extended Services, and Policies and Procedures. 

LOCATION:  

·        SWOW (and off-site meetings or appointments, as applicable).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

1.      Wage of $20.15-$23.29 per hour (based on experience).

2.      As a non-exempt position, this position is eligible for a wage equal to one and a half times the normal wage per hour for “overtime” hours, defined as hours in excess of 40 hours per week.  However, overtime hours MUST be approved in advance by the Executive Director.

3.      Payment of the annual premium for the required professional liability insurance.

4.      Other benefits as outlined in the SWOW Employee Handbook.
