Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Pharmacy Technician will support the Chief Pharmacy Officer, Pharmacist in Charge, and Pharmacy Operations Manager in supervising the daily workflow, production, patient care, customer service, and task delegation to the pharmacy technician staff. In this challenging and fast paced role, the Lead Pharmacy Technician oversees the Pharmacy Technician staff and ensures proper use of established guidelines, policies & procedures, workflow efficiency, pharmacy best practices, staff productivity, associate/staff training, and including performing duties of a pharmacy technician to support the team as needed. The Lead Pharmacy Technician will work closely with the management team to enforce department policies & procedures, pharmacy laws, pharmacy best practices, and staff training.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Active and clear California pharmacy technician license.
  • Experience working in underserved communities such as undocumented workers, unaccompanied minors, LGBT populations, communities of color, youth/adolescents, and those experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and/or mental illness; and
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required (read, write, speak)
  • Licensure/Certification - Employees are responsible for maintaining individual certifications as required by job function or by law and provide verification and recertification when requested by management:
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and car required for travel to different clinic sites and community events.
  • Language Skills
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public. Strong public speaking skills are required for an individual to perform this job successfully.

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must have strong knowledge of MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and Internet software.

Responsibilities

Performs a combination, but not necessarily all, of the following duties:

An individual must be able to successfully perform the essential function of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ensures that patient data and information is accurate when entering prescription data into pharmacy software by reading the prescription; translating prescription information into corresponding system codes; transcribing appropriate prescription data; and creating or modifying patient records.
  • Supports work of the area by filling prescriptions by retrieving prescription orders; counting, pouring, measuring, or weighing medication tablets, liquids and creams; mixing or reconstituting medications as needed, selecting, filling and labeling prescriptions containers; and operating scanning equipment, and/or operating dispensing systems to ensure prescription accuracy.
  • Ensures effective customer service by monitoring and resolving problems in the prescription fulfillment process by processing information for third party insurance claims; rescanning illegible images; alerting patients to inventory that is out of stock, partial fills, and the need for providers’ authorizations on refills; and identifying situations requiring pharmacist’s actions and resolution.
  • Supports the work of the area by processing customer purchases by operating cash registers and related hardware; approving monetary transactions; and using appropriate procedures for different payment types and items sold.
  • Supports quality and customer services by assist the pharmacist in translating the consultation mandated by board of pharmacy by being able to communicate with majority of patients in the health center in their language.
  • Supports the reputation of the department and organization by promoting and maintaining the Pharmacy’s professional reputation and provides patients with pharmacy products and services in accordance with local, state, federal laws, 340B medications program requirements, HRSA and OPA regulations by assisting the pharmacist in the prescription fulfillment process.

Pharmacy Technician II Specific Tasks:

Supervises daily staff productivity and work quality and including ensuring the customer/patient line is kept short throughout the day.

  • Responsible for completing the technician staff’s daily workstation assignment, break and meal period schedule.
  • Coordinates the technician staff’s workflow movement and productivity and including delegating tasks as appropriate to ensure a productive and dynamic workflow to achieve short patient wait time and customer satisfaction and including that no patients are leaving the pharmacy/dispensary without their medications, or at least having provided options or solutions for the patients to access their medications as prescribed by Providers.
  • Will be required to work Saturdays and new operations or business hours to meet business demands and including providing coverage at any of St. John’s Well Child and Family Center Clinic when necessary to meet business needs. May be required to work extended operations hours (in closed door operations after business hours).
  • Assists with escalated patient, providers, and pharmacy calls. Handles escalated calls/issues to ensure patient satisfaction. When appropriate, escalate calls/issues to Supervisors, Pharmacy Operations Manager, or Chief Pharmacy Officer for assistance.
  • Manages special projects and assignments as needed.
  • Assisting Pharmacy Operations manager and Chief Pharmacy Officer in Doing the Schedule for all pharmacy technicians receiving their requests and rotating them in other pharmacies based on the need.
  • Lead technicians will be expected to assist in coverage problems or short notice issues in scheduling technicians so the pharmacy will be always adequately staffed to deliver patient care to our patients.
  • Report problems in the pharmacy to leaders, be eyes and ears, to be able to make appropriate changes.
  • Other duties may be assigned or may be modified as business needs dictate.
