SOLID WASTE OPERATOR II

Position Summary: This position is responsible for the operations of the Riley County Transfer Station, to include operating construction equipment, maintaining equipment and tools, performing manual tasks and operating the scale house . Work assignments include maintaining the closed County landfill, tree and brush disposal area, the composting area, the scrap iron and appliance areas, grounds, equipment and assisting the customer service representatives when needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Provides regular predictable attendance and fosters a cooperative work environment.
• Opens and closes transfer station and gates, secures area at close of business.
• Maintains the solid waste buildings by making minor repairs.
• Maintains the transfer station grounds.
• Operates heavy equipment.
• Performs light maintenance and servicing on equipment.
• Maintains the composting areas, monitors the area for non-compostable materials, stockpiles materials, turns the windrows, moves windrows, and loads out finished product.
• Maintains the wood chip area, accepts, or rejects wood chips in accordance to pre-established criteria, stockpiles wood chips, loads chips.
• Maintains the tree and brush area.
• Maintains the scrap iron and appliance areas.
• Maintains daily labor, equipment, and material use records.
• Transports heavy equipment to and from the Solid Waste facility.
• Maintains parking areas, paved/rock roads.
• Maintains the cap on the closed county landfill.
• Monitors activities within Solid Waste grounds and assists the public.
• Meets periodically with the Assistant County Engineer
• Performs other duties as assigned.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

• Operates the scale house.
• Picks up litter and trash along highways leading to the transfer station.
• Pulls magnet over roads and parking areas to pick up nails.
• Performs daily operator maintenance to fuel, lubricate and clean equipment.
• Removes snow and ice from interior roads & lots.
• Assists Road & Bridge Division in snow removal activities.
• Coordinates and participates in special projects.
• Clean interior and exterior of scale house as needed.
• Attends meetings and training.
• May be required to work during and after hours, any day of the week, including holidays.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required

License(s)/Certificate(s): Commercial Class A Driver’s License required.

Experience: 5 years’ experience operating construction equipment required. 1 year of customer service-related work required. 1 year computer experience (Microsoft products) required. Organizational, interpersonal and communications skills required. Experience with care and safe operation of construction and maintenance equipment required.

Appropriate combination of experience and education will be considered in lieu of requirements.
