Objective

The Automation Technician is a manufacturing professional who reports to the Process Manager and works closely with the Automation Engineer and assists in manufacturing technology to automate production processes in the cement industry. He/she analyzes requirements for production processes including system programs and devices that measure production processes like pressure, flow, weigh feeders, analyzers, and temperature. Analysis includes finding ways to improve current production processes by making improvements to the manufacturing operation platform system. Support field technicians on troubleshooting.

Dimension

The plant Automation Technician reports to the Process Manager and assists in the requirements for the production process, including system programs and devices that measure production processes like pressure, flow, weigh feeders, analyzers and temperature. Assists in selection and design of the equipment used and the installation process to ensure safety, quality, environmental compliance and production. Assists in finding ways to improve current production processes by making improvements to the manufacturing system. He/She also assists in the of administration and maintenance of the Process Control Systems (PLC’s, ECS, HMI).

Nature and Scope of Position

    1. Frequent contact/coordination will be required with:
      1. Production supervision and Operation planning.
      2. Maintenance Leads and Supervisors.
      3. Stockroom and purchasing personnel.
      4. Assigned Outside services supervisors.
      5. Environmental, Quality, GRR and other related areas
      6. Interfaces with Safety and Environmental resources for specific concerns.

  1. Education/Experience
    1. Have a BS Electrical degree, similar degree or equivelant education and experience.
    2. Experience as an Technician and/or Automation Technician and 2 years professional experience working with the following skills:
  2. Networking knowledge (DeviceNet, TCP/IP, Ethernet IP, ControlNet, Client-Server)
  3. PLC knowledge. Rockwell ControlLogix
  4. DCS knowledge
  5. Continuous process knowledge

  1. Object-oriented, high-end programming knowledge (desirablePlanning/Scheduling experience.
  2. A history of leadership/cooperation and positive communication is desired.
  3. Knowledge/Ability and attitude to team work and fast learning.
    1. Microsoft Word, Excel,Outlook, Powerpoint and Project.
    2. Strong Organizational skills and attention to detail.
    3. Ability to read standard blueprints, machine and process drawings. Have the ability to sketch or redline existing drawings.
    4. Ability to work within a team or independently as required.
    5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    6. Can manage multiple priorities or projects simultaneously and keep them progressing to completion.
    7. Able to provide support 24/7, remote or on site when required.

Principle Accountabilities

  1. Assists in methods and programming to aid in the reduction of workplace accidents and to improve safety in the plant through automation initiatives.
  2. Assists in maintaining and repairing the plant automation control computers and operator interface systems including servers, data acquisition systems and user clients.
  3. Assists in hardware and software upgrades in order to keep the systems updated to improve equipment reliability and availability.
  4. Assists in coordination and plans with the production group to improve the plant operation thru changes in control system, computer programming and process control.
  5. Works closely with the control room operators to resolve operational issues and make improvements to the information available to the operators. Assists in keeping PID’s tuned.
  6. Works with Automation Engineer to trouble shoot and diagnose complex control system problems and implement solutions.
  7. Coordinates with the plant engineers to install capital project improvemnts that require automation and electrical systems and to specify equipment.
  8. Must have knowledge in all electrical systems including, but not limited to, power systems, motor control, variable frequency drives, HMI’s, instrumentation and computers.
