Job Description

Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to maintain and make repairs to forced air and boiler heating systems, Geo-Thermal GSHP, domestic hot water, refrigeration systems, and all other types of heating/cooling systems. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining fire equipment.

All activities must support the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (“HACP” or “Authority”) mission, strategic goals and objectives.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The position duties and responsibilities listed below describe the general nature and scope of work. Other responsibilities, duties and skills may be required and assigned, as needed.

  • Operates and maintains all mechanical and gas-fired equipment in the heating systems including heating plants and boiler rooms.

  • Operates, maintain, and repairs forced air and boiler heating systems, Geo-Thermal GSHP, domestic hot water, refrigeration systems, and all other types of heating/cooling systems.

  • Keeps the central heating plant distribution systems of the various communities in prime operating condition.

  • Keeps all equipment and stations free from hazards and makes routine inspections as necessary.

  • Assures a safe work zone and conditions when performing any type of related repairs.

  • Prepares the necessary charts, records, and reports necessary in the efficient operations of engineering services.

  • Completes repairs in a time efficient manner, maintains and completes work orders timely, either by hand or electronically.

  • Maintains a thorough log book for reference, maintains inventory of tools, materials, and supplies needed to carry out assignments; orders additional resources when needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or GED equivalent required along with the completion of an approved apprenticeship program. Must have a Universal Refrigerant Recovery License. A NIULPE Licensing is also preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license and be insurable under the Authority’s plan.

 

Technical Skills

To perform this job successfully, the employee should be able to successfully operate a variety of applicable hand-held tools and devices. Must have general and specific knowledge related to electrical, heating, and mechanical systems, including of all safety rules and practices. Must have a demonstrated knowledge of practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the trade. Must be able to read and apply blue prints / schematics and specifications. Must have knowledge of the boiler code, smoke abatement code, and fire underwriter’s code. The employee should have basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel, and Outlook). Must have the ability to learn other computer software programs as required by assigned tasks.

To perform this job successfully, the employee is frequently required to travel to various Authority properties to oversee maintenance projects. Daily movements include sitting; standing; reaching and grasping; operating computers and other office equipment; moving about the properties; and attending on-site meetings and off-site meetings. The employee must be able to exchange information in person, in writing, and via telephone. The employee must occasionally transport up to 50 pounds.

Position generally works on Authority properties, which may cause the employee to experience a range in temperatures and other weather conditions. The noise level may be loud and the environment may be more hazardous than a standard office environment. This position may be required to work with contractors as well as Authority residents.

Employees must have access to 24 hour reliable internet service. Employees must also have reliable transportation to and from work, as well as, to get to and from multiple HACP locations based on business needs and assignments.
