Job Description

The maintenance technician is a full-time, year-round, non-exempt employee of Friends of the High Line. As a member of the Facilities Department, the maintenance technician will report to the director of facilities and maintenance and will play a key role in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the High Line's unique systems and infrastructural elements including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and security functions on the High Line park, as well as the High Line offices and associates spaces.

Requirements

Perform maintenance on specialized infrastructure elements, including but not limited to: HVAC, LED lighting, electrical distribution for events, irrigation pumps, a specialized water feature, bathroom fixtures, security gates and cameras, elevators, fire alarms, small gas-powered and electric equipment, wood park furniture and decking, concrete structure and pavers, and painted steel.

  • Conduct daily rounds and readings of mechanical areas
  • Complete work orders on computerized maintenance management system as assigned, tracking time, resources, and materials used daily.
  • Execute complete daily reports outlining progress and new issues
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and calibrate small gas-powered equipment such as snow blowers, lawn mowers, power washers, etc
  • Operate and maintain tools including drills, grinders, welders, table saws, and air compressors
  • Troubleshoot and maintain water features including pumps, filters, actuators, strainers, monitoring of chemical levels, UV system, and spring and fall seasonal preparation
  • Safely operate tools and equipment in compliance with all federal, state, and local safety requirements, including but not limited to:
    • electric vehicles
    • specialized equipment
    • small power equipment
    • hand tools, etc
  • Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks, protective gloves, hard hats, goggles, etc
  • Maintain a clean and safe workplace
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including winter snow and ice removal
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 4 years of relevant work experience
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Must be able to successfully complete required practical and/or written exams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid NYS driver’s license

Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks
  • Ability to relate well to the public in a highly-visited public space
  • Ability to use ladders, scaffolding, and/or a scissor lift while performing job duties
  • Ability to work with power tools, small motorized equipment, and vehicles
  • Ability to work alone or in groups
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on an on-call basis as needed
  • Ability to acquire required 30 hrs OSHA training, S95, S94, S11, F60, E21, and C92 FDNY certificates of fitness and a Pool & Spa Operator certification
  • Ability to reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and regularly lift and/or move 50 lbs., and occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects utilizing proper tools and leverage methods over 75 lbs
  • Able to use Google suite, and email

This is a full-time, non-exempt position that reports to the Director of Facilities & Maintenance and is part of the Facilities team.

Actual salaries may vary on various factors, including but not limited to experience and performance. The hourly salary is set at $30/hour.

The location for the role has a requirement to physically report to the office for all scheduled shifts (located in Manhattan's Meatpacking District in New York City).
