Summary Job Description: Shop Carmen (Car Fabrication & Repair Persons): The position entails troubleshooting, inspecting, and repairing the South Shore Line's self-propelled coaches. Headquartered in Michigan City, Indiana, with locations in Hammond, Dyer, Miller, and the Chicago area. Shop carmen work one of three shifts per day performing their work. Shop carmen have extensive knowledge in metalwork, vehicle disassembly, rebuilding, fabrication, pneumatic systems, welding, and performance troubleshooting. While most of the work is Monday through Friday, successful applicants should expect that they may be required to work overtime, evenings, weekends, nights, holidays, and relief assignments consistent with their seniority and the needs of the service.
Essential Functions:
  • Performs inspection, testing and maintenance of locomotives and passenger cars in accordance with federal regulations and SSL standards and guidelines
  • Troubleshoots equipment to determine corrective actions and causes of equipment failures. Makes appropriate repairs or replacements
  • Repairs doors, windows, interior equipment, access panels, hand brakes, brake shoes, outside car body components, bolsters, underframes, side sills, fire extinguishers, emergency tools and first aid kits, wheel sets, brakes, brake pads, suspensions, pneumatic systems, and signage
  • Uses a variety of test equipment to diagnose malfunctions, troubleshoot and repair components and systems
  • Maintains proper care and use of materials, test equipment, machines and hand tools normally associated with assigned job
  • May perform welding, painting, stenciling, decaling, and burning
  • Cut metal, sandblast, and replace various car components
  • General railroad car construction and rebuilding tasks
  • Inspect and salvage parts from dismantled and/or scrapped cars.
  • Clean, lubricate, and maintain railroad equipment
  • Remove and replace couplers, draft gears, and yokes in conjunction with any other ancillary parts and equipment
  • Fabricate jigs and fixtures for use in assembling parts on railroad cars
  • Straighten, fabricate, or repair steel parts such as grab irons, handholds, ladders, brackets, steps, and patching components.
  • Operate cranes, forklifts, and other shop equipment.
  • Assemble, disassemble, troubleshoot, repair, and replace passenger car interiors including, but not limited to, seating, windows, walls, roofs, and toilet systems, HVAC systems and associated items.

Requirements:
  • Must be in good physical health to fulfill the essential functions of the assignment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have some welding skills and skills with the use of hand tools.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude; sufficient reading and comprehension skills to be able to perform the essential functions including, but not limited to, the understanding and application of Federal and SSL standards and regulations.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, Diagrams.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computers, electronic tools, and hand tools to be able to perform the essential functions.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate clearly and fluently so as to understand and follow the General Code of Operating Rules, communicate essential operational and safety information, and pass periodic rule/safety/technical examinations.
  • Mechanical aptitude, experience operating heavy moving machinery, experience with cleaning, good physical strength and endurance, and good interpersonal skills when interacting with supervisors and other employees.
  • Flexible about unexpected changes in work assignments or priorities.
  • Ability to work in Michigan City or surrounding areas that SSL provides service. based on seniority and needs of the service.
  • Valid motor vehicle license and reliable transportation to and from Assigned work area.
  • Must be able to pass drug test, physical examination, and satisfactory background check as a condition subsequent to any offer of employment.
Environmental Conditions: Work is primarily indoors in an industrial shop facility. The positions are primarily Monday-Friday on first shift. Second shift though third shift and weekend work may be required. Work surfaces may be uneven at times and may require using a ladder or welding tools. Levels of activity vary from moderate to intense. Stressful situations may occur. Exposure to heat, cold, and humidity is common.
Experience Relevant To Position (preferred but not required to apply):Maintenance, inspection, or fabrication work on own or as part of a crew, experience in factory or fleet maintenance, heavy equipment operation, railroad mechanical or operating experience, successful work with varying shifts or night shifts, prior licensing for positions in the truck, airline, or rail industry, outdoor or varying shifts in military service.
Salary and Benefits: Wages start at $21.83/hour and increase 5% per year until the maximum current rate of $29.11 is reached. Benefits include pensions, tuition reimbursement, medical care, dental care, college tuition reimbursement, and life insurance.
