Billing Specialist

Job Summary: The billing specialist oversees the tasks of sending invoices to clients and monitoring outstanding balances to ensure each account is paid on time and in full. They help our organization keep track of how much money is owed and by whom, often managing numerous client accounts at once. The ideal candidate must have excellent accounting skills as well as deep organizational skills to accurately handle all of the incoming payments, outgoing invoices, database updates, and more that make up their day-to-day responsibilities. On top of this meticulous attention to detail, the billing specialist must also possess excellent communication skills to answer questions for clients, solve their issues, and keep them updated with relevant account information.

Duties and responsibilities:

· Reviewing patient bills for accuracy, completeness, and obtaining any missing information.
· Preparing, reviewing, and transmitting claims using billing software, including electronic and paper claim processing.
· Following up on unpaid claims within the standard billing cycle timeframe.
· Checking each insurance payment for accuracy and compliance with contract discount.
· Calling insurance companies regarding any discrepancy in payments.

. Identifying and billing secondary or tertiary insurances.
· Reviewing accounts for patient insurance follow-up.
· Researching and appealing denied claims.
· Answering all patient or insurance telephone inquiries pertaining to assigned accounts.
· Setting up patient payment plans and working collection accounts.
· Updating billing software with rate changes.

. Updating cash spreadsheets and running collection reports.

· Other duties as required.

Education, Experience AND Special Skills Required

· A minimum of 1-3 years of recent experience in medical billing required
· Preferred Athena EHR experience
· Preferred experience/knowledge of COVID-19 billing procedures
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially to a diverse range of audiences and settings
· The ability to problem solve and make decisions
