Our Client, a well respected DC Transit System, is seeking a Technician to start immediately on a contract basis.

Candidates must be available for any shift, 7 days a week, as this is a Union position so shifts are chosen in seniority order.

This position performs maintenance activities in support of the client. The responsibility of this classification includes independently performing - under general supervision - skilled electrical/electronic and mechanical work to diagnose, maintain, repair, rebuild, overhaul, service, inspect, and test streetcar transit vehicles and equipment and their electronic systems and equipment; he/she also performs testing and repair of communications systems, security equipment, and other related equipment. Employees in this classification must be able to work independently and unsupervised for extended periods of time.

Maintenance Technician Responsibilities:

  • Performs safety and preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles, systems, and equipment.
  • Documents defects, maintenance and repairs.
  • Tests, maintains, repairs, and overhauls streetcar vehicle electrical, electronic and mechanical systems and equipment in accordance with schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, operations manuals and manufacturer instructions.
  • Operates and maintains shop equipment and tools.
  • Makes time and material cost estimates and maintains records.
  • Performs re-railing of equipment.
  • Repairs, replaces, or modifies electronic and electrical components and defective parts for a variety of equipment and systems controls.
  • Troubleshoots analog and solid-state electronic systems.
  • Installs special electronic testing systems; installs communication devices on cars.
  • Services and maintains microprocessor control systems.
  • Inspects new microprocessor and solid state systems installed by contractors.
  • Calibrates and repairs test equipment.
  • Maintains parts inventory and computer inventory records.
  • Operates computers for testing, diagnosing, fault log management, and related data input and retrieval.
  • Maintains a safe and clean shop and work area.
  • Prepares various activity and status reports, documents defects and repairs on inspection forms, work orders, or designated computer programs.
  • May be assigned Lead duties.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays and evening hours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Maintenance Technician Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia State Driver’s License.
  • Must maintain a personal toolbox on-site with general specific tools. (list provided)
  • Working knowledge of AC/DC systems, operating principles of analog and digital electronics, electronic control circuitry and associated mechanical systems, heating, lighting, air conditioning, motors, brakes and related systems.
  • Working knowledge of operating and preventive maintenance requirements found on electric transit vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of testing and inspection methods, solid state circuitry diagnostic and repair techniques and procedures.
  • Willing to cross-train to perform tasks associated with Signals, Communications, Overhead Contact System, Traction Power and Track.
  • Knowledge of mechanical principals, repair methods, standards, and practices.
  • Knowledge of test equipment and tools needed for the repair, maintenance, and installation of mechanical, electronic and electrical systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of theory and principles of advanced analog, electronic and electrical equipment and circuits.
  • Knowledge of general shop safety procedures.
  • Oral and written communication skills- able to read and follow directions given in oral or written form; able to effectively read, understand, and use technical information found in repair manuals, service change bulletins, and applicable technical documents, including parts and supply manuals.
  • Problem-solving & analytical skills.
  • Skill in performing maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, rebuilding, overhauling, and safety/preventive maintenance inspections.
  • Skills required for performing overhaul of electrical and mechanical systems involving such systems as trucks, wheels, brakes, air conditioning, doors, and other systems found on light rail vehicles.
  • Skill in analyzing malfunctions in electrical/electronic transit equipment and determining repair requirements.
  • Skill in performing electronic fabrication and assembly tasks, such as soldering and wire harnessing.
  • Skills in making time and material cost estimates and keep accurate records.
  • Skills in implementing preventive maintenance and safety inspection procedures.
  • Skills in using test and shop equipment and tools, parts and supply manuals.
  • Able to operate portable test equipment and bench type workstation.
  • Able to operate Windows-based computer software, including file structure and naming conversions.
  • Able to meet established deadlines.
  • Able to learn and stay current on all new technologies introduced into the transit industries as it relates to light rail vehicle maintenance.
  • Skills in familiarizing other Electro-Mechanics and other classifications in the proper method of performing their job.
  • Skills in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of business.
  • Skills in reading and interpreting blueprints, maintenance manuals, schematics, construction drawings, and specifications.
  • Skills in learning operating system languages as required.
  • Skills in preparing written reports, documenting defects and repairs on inspection forms, work orders, or designated computer programs.
