Job description

Railcar Mechanic

Kalamazoo, MI

Road & Rail Services

Road & Rail Services is hiring a dependable, mechanically skilled Railcar Mechanic to join our team. This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys working with tools, solving mechanical problems, and completing quality repairs in an outdoor industrial environment.

Previous railcar repair experience is preferred, but we are also interested in candidates with strong mechanical, welding, fabrication, or industrial maintenance experience.

What You'll Do

As a Railcar Mechanic, you will inspect, maintain, and repair railcars to help ensure they are safe and ready for service. You will use hand tools, welding equipment, cutting torches, and fabrication skills to complete repairs according to company and industry standards.

Your responsibilities will include:

Performing mechanical repairs and maintenance on railcars
Completing stick welding, cutting, grinding, and metal fabrication
Inspecting equipment and identifying needed repairs
Following all company safety procedures and work instructions
What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate has a strong mechanical background and is comfortable working independently in a fast-paced outdoor environment.

Preferred experience includes:

Stick welding and metal fabrication
Cutting torch and grinder experience
Experience using pipe wrenches, pry bars, ratchets, and other hand tools
Previous railcar, heavy equipment, industrial, or mechanical repair experience
What the Job Requires

This is a physically demanding role that involves working outdoors in changing weather conditions. Candidates must be comfortable climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, and working around heavy equipment.

You must be able to:

Bend, squat, twist, walk, and stand throughout the shift
Open railcar doors requiring significant pushing and pulling force
Climb ladders and work at heights exceeding 16 feet
Work outdoors in heat, cold, dust, rain, and noisy conditions

A valid driver's license may be required when operating company vehicles or equipment.
