Job description

Railcar Prepper – First Shift

Company: Road & Rail Services
Location: Lafayette, Indiana
Starting Pay: $18.00 per hour
Shift: First Shift
Start Time: 5:00 a.m.

Start a Hands-On Career in Rail Operations

Road & Rail Services is seeking a safety-minded, reliable Railcar Prepper for our Lafayette operation. In this role, you will help get railcars ready for loading by inspecting their condition, clearing debris, and completing required preparation work.

This is an active outdoor position for someone who prefers hands-on work over sitting behind a desk. You will spend much of the shift standing, walking, bending, climbing, and using tools. Previous railroad experience is helpful, but it is not required. Candidates with experience in construction, manufacturing, landscaping, warehousing, maintenance, or other physical work environments may have skills that transfer well to this position.

What You'll Do

Your daily responsibilities will include:

Examine railcars for debris, contaminants, and areas requiring additional preparation

Remove dirt and unwanted materials with backpack blowers, scrapers, and hand tools

Prepare railcars according to company and customer work instructions

Climb ladders and safely complete assignments at heights of up to 20 feet

Inspect tools and equipment before use

Keep assigned work areas clean and free from avoidable hazards

Communicate safety concerns or problems to the appropriate supervisor

Follow all company, customer, and industry safety procedures

Properly wear and maintain required personal protective equipment

Complete other railcar-preparation duties assigned by site management

What You'll Need

We are looking for applicants who take attendance, safety, and teamwork seriously. To succeed in this position, you must be able to:

Arrive consistently and be ready to begin work at 5:00 a.m.

Lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds

Stand and walk for extended periods

Frequently bend, reach, squat, climb, and move throughout the workday

Safely climb ladders and work at elevated heights

Perform physical work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, and changing seasonal conditions

Work around railcars, industrial equipment, loud noise, and active operations

Understand and follow written and verbal work instructions

Work productively both independently and as part of a team

Maintain a safety-first approach throughout every assignment

Previous railcar-preparation experience is welcome but is not required for dependable candidates who are prepared to learn.

Pay and Employee Benefits

This position starts at $18.00 per hour. Road & Rail Services also offers:

Medical, dental and vision insurance

401(k) retirement benefits with company matching

Paid holidays and vacation time

Company-provided personal protective equipment

Annual steel-toe footwear allowance

Opportunities to learn additional skills

Potential advancement within the company

Road & Rail Services is a veteran-friendly employer and believes in developing hardworking employees and promoting qualified team members from within.
