WOOSTER COMMUNITY HOSPITAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Coordinator, EMS

MAIN FUNCTION:

Oversees deliverance of medical care by EMS providers who are functioning under the WCH Emergency Department Medical Director. Provides opportunities for education and training of area EMS personnel. Serves as liaison with organizations that have impact on area EMS functions. Acts as a resource person in area of EMS. Works with the Beaverson EMS Institute's benefactor, oversees projects, programs, and purchases that the fund underwrites. Develops and implements continuous quality improvement programs through review and analysis of EMS processes, system trends, and patient outcomes, in order to ensure EMS system effectiveness. Assists with development and updates of EMS policies and procedures. Active member of the Emergency Preparedness committee, to include: meeting attendance, assisting with disaster readiness, and participating in the planning and implementation of table-top, functional, and full-scale preparedness exercises. Collaborates with AHA Coordinator to maintain compliance with American Heart Association (AHA); assists with coordination of AHA program schedules, equipment, and courses

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director, ED

MUST HAVE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Paramedic, State of Ohio, with at least 5 years of current field experience.
  • State of Ohio EMS CE or EMS Instructor.
  • American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS Instructor certification within 1 year.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Leadership ability.
  • Strong customer service philosophy

  • Ability to work independently with flexible schedule

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES:

  • 2-5 years experience as an EMS Instructor.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult education principles.
  • Emergency/Disaster preparedness experience.
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS instructor certification.
  • PHTLS, ITLS or ATT provider and/or instructor.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Employees in this position may be:

  • Exposed to blood, body fluids and/or airborne pathogens and are required to wear barriers
  • Employees in this position must be able to push, pull, lift, carry, turn, crouch, and bend as necessary to complete nursing care tasks
  • Able to work flexible hours (weekends)
  • Ability to travel throughout the service area of local EMS and to a variety of other meetings/conferences to meet certifications

Communication

In conjunction with the manager:

  1. Demonstrates ability to have and manage a crucial conversation. Coaches staff in development of the ability to have crucial conversations.
  2. Utilizes AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Expectations, Thank You) strategies to foster positive communication
  3. Demonstrates conflict resolution skills
  4. Conducts and documents staff meetings/communication sessions
  5. Maintain formal and informal methods of communication of changes in practice, policies, procedures, expectations, performance improvement. Ex: unit bulletin boards, email, Intranet, departmental sites, educational sessions
  6. Maintains awareness of verbal/ non verbal communication in interactions with staff, other departments, customers, physicians, patients and families
  7. Maintains patient and staff confidentiality in all communication interactions: written, verbal, electronic and digital
  8. Facilitates collaboration and communication with physicians and all members of the healthcare team
  9. Facilitates staff debriefing after significant critical event
  10. Interacts with clinical students in positive, productive manner
  11. Use face to face resolutions (crucial conversations) to intervene with patients, staff, and physicians in situations where customer needs have not been met to determine a positive, mutually agreeable resolution
  12. Develops, implements and communicates policies/procedures which effectively meet regulatory, human resources, quality and risk management requirements

Operations

Coordinates WCH EMS CE Site:

  1. Coordinates the education and training of area EMTs to promote excellent pre-hospital care; assists instructors with class objectives and content for department specific trainings; Coordinates, plans, implements necessary classes and maintains records for re-certification of EMS providers.

  1. Holds regularly scheduled EMS liaison meetings

  1. Regularly attends Regional Physician Advisory Board meetings

  1. Acts as liaison with and is a resource person for area squad personnel for non-WCH sponsored classes

  1. Maintains Quality Indicators, reviews patient care reports and provides follow-up for squads.

  1. Responds, acknowledges calls, and requests for information or services in a timely manner

  1. Serves as a primary investigator of any complaint that involves EMS regardless of the origin of the complaint

  1. Assures appropriate & current documentation of EMS Pharmacy, DEA & CLIA licenses/certifications

  1. Develops department strategic plans and or goals

  1. Coordinates preceptorship of students as needed for EMS educational programs that have contracts with WCH

  1. Demonstrates knowledge and assists EMS providers with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician certification and renewal process

  1. Recognizes and is responsive to the needs of the students as well as all EMS providers who come to WCH in stressful situations. Arranges debriefings as needed.

  1. Assumes responsibility for department PI activities

  1. Participates in budget preparation and monitors monthly responsibility reports and effectively controls expenditures

  1. Interacts with other hospital departments and ED staff in a positive manner

  1. Assists/works in ED, as needed

  1. Works collaboratively with ED Manager and ED Medical Director

  1. Develops working relationships with local hospital EMS coordinators, other health care facilities, vendors, patients, physicians, Police, Fire and EMS agencies

  1. Maintains/promotes harmonious relationship with outside agencies, community groups and other WCH training groups

  1. Review and update/revise protocols on a yearly basis, if needed

  1. Works independently & fulfills flexible hours to accommodate EMS needs

  1. Collaborates with WCH American Heart Association Coordinator

  1. Participates in community emergency preparedness through active participation in local emergency planning

Customer Service

  1. Displays positive attitude. Treats others with honesty and respect. Speaks positively in all customer interactions internal and external
  2. Assess customer satisfaction when rounding on staff/patients and Use AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation ,Thank you) to:
  • Optimize the patient’s experience by reducing the patient and family’s anxiety and increasing the patient’s compliance
  • Develop/maintain a positive relationship with other departments which fosters interdisciplinary collaborative customer relationships
  1. Intervene with patients /staff using crucial conversation skills in situations in which customer needs have not been met to determine a positive, mutually agreeable resolution
  2. Assesses customer service by reviewing and responding to patient satisfaction surveys

Staff Development / Professional Growth

In conjunction with the Emergency Department Manager, Clinical Specialist and/ or Educator:

  1. Facilitates the ongoing educational and professional growth opportunities for all employees including employee orientation, PI education and required hospital in-services
  2. Annual / ongoing competency validation to assure proficiency in performing assigned tasks
  3. Assesses educational needs of staff and provides/coordinates educational programs
  4. Completes assigned performance evaluations within specific time limits
  5. Facilitates student experiences
  6. Demonstrate professional growth by attending conferences, leading committees/unit projects and ongoing educational activities. Obtaining specialty certification or training and maintaining membership/being active in professional organizations
  1. Demonstrates support of all affiliated teaching programs
