Job Description

Sterile Processing Technician

Under close supervision, Sterile Processing Technicians are assigned to one of two hospital campuses and responsible for decontamination, inspection, testing, sorting, assembling, packaging, distributing, and collecting a variety of reusable medical and surgical equipment, instrumentation and supplies, and operating autoclave in the sterilization of same; perform related duties as required.

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Inspects, tests, cleans, decontaminates, and sterilizes returned reusable, supplies and instrumentation, ensuring all parts have been returned and are operable, selecting appropriate cleaning agents and decontamination and sterilization processes.
  • Makes equipment rounds and return soiled equipment to SPD; clean equipment per manufacturer's recommendations and validate functionality prior to storage.
  • Answers phones.
  • Operates all equipment in Sterile Processing including, but not limited to, steam sterilizers, plasma sterilizers, automated endoscope Reprocesses, biological incubators, heat sealers, instrument, and cart washers.
  • Identifies and assembles medical and surgical instrumentation and supplies using count sheets; package in accordance with sterilization modality to be used; generate and attach labels; sterilize, and if required, aerate.
  • Assembles instruments; distributes sterilized supplies and patient care equipment, check correctness of requisitions and accuracy of inventory and issue supplies.
  • Creates and maintains accurate, inventory, sterilization, and testing records and logs using a computer, laser wand, or scanner for barcode entry; run reports.
  • Stores and maintains all sterile supplies; stock and maintain processing areas; clean and test sterilizers; keep storage areas clean and orderly; inspect, fold and stack sterilized linen.
  • Ensures that the department policies and procedures are followed; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

Six (6) months of experience in an acute care hospital operating sterilizing equipment and cleaning surgical instruments and equipment.

Successful completion of a Central Service Technician/Sterile Processing Technician or Surgical Technician course within the last eighteen (18) months from a school accredited by the International Association of Health Care Services Material Management (IAHCSMM) OR the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) OR Perdue.

Certification from the International Association of Health Care Services Material Management (IAHCSMM) OR the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) OR National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) OR American Surgical Technician Association (ASA).

CERTIFICATION: Must possess certification as a Central Service Technician/Sterile Processing Technician from one of the following:

•The International Association of Health Care Services Material Management (IAHCSMM)
•Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
•National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
•Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)
•American Surgical Technician Association (ASA)
