Port Washington Children's Center

The Port Washington Children’s Center is a non-profit organization that has been providing progressive, equal access to quality education for working families in the town of Port Washington for over 43 years. We are non-sectarian Center housed in the historic Landmark Building situated in Blumenfeld Family Park. We offer full day early childhood care, after school programming which extends to local elementary schools and a Summer day camp.

Our mission is to ensure that families, no matter the income level, have the same educational access to our private school’s programming and care. Through community engagement and partnership, we have remained an important institution and service provider to the Port Washington Community. Our visioning forward includes both deepening and broadening our reach while enriching and investing in programming, staff and family offerings for years to come.


Job Description

We are currently looking for a number of different positions mainly Assistant Teachers with availability to work Monday through Friday from 11am to 6.30pm as well as a limited number of Lead Teachers with availability to work Monday through Friday.


The Assistant Teacher position assists in implementing a developmentally appropriate, child-centered and emergent curriculum which encourages learning through exploration and discovery. The Assistant Teacher works with a team of both Head and Assistant Teachers to observe, individualize and execute customized curricula and lesson plans that supports children’s individual needs.


Responsibilities

· Assess and support children's cognitive, social-emotional, language and physical development

· Ensure the health, safety and well-being of children by providing close and engaged supervision of children during all activities

· Adhere to all OCFS licensing regulations and required health and safety practices

· Participate in the ongoing observation, assessments and lesson planning implementation in support of Head Teacher

· Meet with the Head Teacher, Assistant Director and Executive Director for supervision, goal setting, ongoing coaching and evaluation

· Participate in staff development and various required meetings and trainings

· Provide ongoing daily, welcoming, thoughtful and collaborative communication with parents in conjunction with Head Teacher

· In Head Teacher’s absence, ensure quality of program practices and developmentally appropriate activities

· Help maintain a well-organized, clean and safe environment, reporting any safety issues in the classroom to the Assistant Director

· Complete all required administrative tasks such as attendance-taking, CACFP reporting, etc.

· Exhibit flexibility and embrace team collaboration to support other classrooms when needed to retain the quality of the program


Required Qualifications

· Ability to lift 40 pounds

· Ability to stand on feet and sit on floor 40 hours a week

· Participation in outdoor supervision including pool and water play supervision; hikes to local outdoor streams and parks on property; tolerance for varying outdoor weather conditions


Preferred Qualifications

· 3+ years working in a childcare or preschool environment

· Associate degree and/or CDA in Early Childhood Education

· Knowledge of appropriate practice, child development and emergent curricula planning

· Strong commitment to education; interest in personal development and continuing education

· Experience working in a team environment in collaboration with colleagues

· Confidence both leading and supporting a classroom environment

· Exhibit a passion for education, development of young children and demeanor displaying patience and self-reflectiveness


Desired Qualifications

· Experience in a high quality, emergent school

· Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field

· Additional continuing education from progressive institutions
