Charleston Collegiate School is an independent day school that strives to recognize, nurture, and challenge each of its students. Organized as a Lower School (PK3-5), Middle School (6-8), and Upper School (9-12).


Job Summary:

The School Nurse will treat students for medical issues, help prevent physical issues and disease, and coordinate routine health assessments.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for professional, medical treatment of students.
  • Responsible for early detection of physical problems and health evaluations
  • Responsible for disease prevention.
  • Assists in promoting programs on health education and immunization.
  • Maintains clinical records.
  • Provides emergency aid to students and school staff.
  • Assists teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education.
  • A current unrestricted South Carolina Registered Nurse License
  • Be a graduate of a State approved nursing program
  • Basic computer skills required, keyboarding proficient
  • Red Cross or American Heart Association BLS, CPR Certified
  • A minimum of one year experience (preferred)
  • Maintains the Health Room
  • Administers First Aid and care to ill or injured students and staff. Student Care being the main objective.
  • Documents nursing interventions on computer software (Veracross)
  • Maintains up-to-date cumulative Health records on all students.
  • Identifies students with Chronic Illnesses, students whose conditions could result in emergency care, and students who will self-administer and self-monitor medications and/or procedures while at school.
  • The RN (School Nurse) prepares Individual Health Care Plans and/or Emergency Action Plans on those students with Chronic Illness, Students with conditions that could result in an emergency, and students who self-administer/ self-monitor medications and/or procedures while at school. The RN will prepare the necessary care plan and will obtain signatures from the parent, the health care provider, and the student when applicable.
  • Assumes responsibility for monitoring student immunizations required by law and completing a 45 day immunization report required by SCDHEC.
  • Performs Vision and Hearing screening as recommended by the State and school district; appropriate follow-up. Performs Assistance Team Screenings when indicated by Special Education Services.
  • Administers medication to students according to District policies and guidelines always adhering to LLR Nursing Board Guidelines.
  • Observes and reports regularly to the nurse supervisor on identified health problems of students that deviate from the applicable plan of care. Collaborates with the nursing supervisor for further instructions in revision of the Students Individual Health Care Plan.
  • Orders Health Room Supplies.
  • Completes UAP (Unlicensed Assistive Personnel) training on medication administration when applicable for
  • Field Trips and when there is no RN at school. UAP Training follows the guidelines established by the LLR
  • Nursing Board in Opinions Established related to School Health.
  • Keeps the school principal informed of any health-related problems and/or injuries at school requiring immediate care by EMS or parent pick up.
  • Reports outbreaks of Communicable diseases.
  • Performs any other duties as may be assigned by the principal or Head of School keeping duties to students in the Health Room as a first priority.
  • Maintains capability of securing EMS support via 911.

Professional Growth Responsibility:

  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth by completing 30 hours of LLR Board-approved nursing continuing education every two years. A requirement of South Carolina Licensure.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy object or materials.
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds. Medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
  • Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.
  • May require local travel.
  • Works primarily inside, but may require work during outside activities.
  • Noise levels may be such that will require loud talking in order to be heard on occasion.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of community agencies to help students and their families.
  • Knowledge of district policies and procedures.

Education and Experience:

  • Registered nurse (RN) certification required.
  • Current nursing license required.
  • Driver's license required for student transport highly desirable.
  • Basic Life Support Certification (Required)
  • CPR Certification
