Job Description

The Outside Plant (OSP) Telecommunications Foreman will have primary responsibility for managing the installation, maintenance, and repair of OSP telecommunications infrastructure. This will include oversight of field subordinate staff in constructing, repairing, transferring, and decommissioning Fiber Optics, CATV, and Copper cable plants, including both aerial and underground infrastructure. Education and Experience:

  • 3+ years in Aerial/Underground Line work
  • High school Diploma or equivalent
  • Fiber Splicer Certification preferred.
  • Comfortable with climbing heights is a must


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding fundamental construction techniques and safety protocols is crucial, to include knowledge of excavation, trenching, and equipment operation
  • Familiarity with construction materials, such as concrete, steel, and various types of cables
  • Well-versed in installing and maintaining different types of communication lines: coax, fiber, and copper
  • Expertise in splicing fiber optics, coaxial cables, and copper lines ensures reliable connections
  • Knowledgeable of separation and clearance regulations, to include guidelines to prevent interference between different utility lines (e.g., power lines, gas lines, and communication cables), as well the ability to identify existing underground utilities
  • Ensure proper safety practices during installations to prevent accidents and protect workers
  • Understanding technical drawings and engineering plans is essential.
  • Knowledge of traffic control procedures and the ability to manage traffic during construction or maintenance work
  • Accurate reporting to ensure transparency and accountability, especially when documenting work progress, materials used, and any issues
  • Ability to design OSP infrastructure like planning routes, selecting suitable materials, and optimizing network efficiency
  • Ability to monitor, coach and participate in the work to ensures high-quality installations
  • Adhere to quality standards prevents future issues and maintain customer satisfaction
  • Ability to work at height adhering to all safety protocols, to include OSHA
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the telecommunications industry.
  • Ability to safely utilize bucket trucks or climb utility poles to place cables on poles per system design.
  • Ability to Adjust on switches, relays, and other electrical control devices for maximum operating efficiency
  • Effective and professional written and oral communication skills

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the installation, upkeep, and repair of the OSP telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Lead the field staff in various tasks, ensuring work is done efficiently and correctly
  • Oversee the construction, repair, transfer, and decommissioning of these cable plants in the telecommunications space
  • Manage both aerial and underground telecommunications infrastructure
  • Read and understand work orders, specifications, and engineering drawings
  • Read and understand site plans, maps, diagrams, designs, and prints needed to support project(s).
  • Use and understand automated dispatch equipment (i.e., handheld terminals), and appropriate test equipment to verify proper installation and/or repair.
  • Install all passive and active devices, pedestals, and vaults and fiber splice cases required to house CAT-V equipment per customer requirements
  • Repair or splice in new lines as needed
  • Test fiber lines for balanced signal between points-continuity and fault
  • Optimize new Nodes and splice in node splits to reduce capacity
  • Complete production sheets, verify proper levels after activation, and adjust and troubleshoot as necessary
  • Ensure proper safety techniques and incident reporting procedures are followed
  • Adhere to company safety protocols and policies

Successful candidates must:
• Possess active valid Driver’s License
• Pass a pre-employment DOT drug & alcohol screening with on-going program participation.
• Pass fitness testing.
• Pass background screening.
• Be able to fulfil rotational assignments by travel within state of Alaska approx.75% of the year
• Possess trade hand tools
