Mid-City Community Advocacy Network (Mid-City CAN) is a community collaborative comprised

of hundreds of partners and thousands of residents in San Diego’s communities of color. Centered in the City Heights Community, Mid-City CAN’s mission is to create a safe, productive, and healthy community through collaboration, advocacy, and organizing. In its 35th year Mid-City CAN plays an essential role in the San Diego Region by facilitating dialogue, identifying common issues, spearheading advocacy efforts, building power, and training residents to take leadership roles in affecting change. Campaign wins include $5.1 million towards two skate parks and the Halal school lunch program to name a few.

Reporting to the Organizing Director, the Base-builder, works as assigned to assist the community organizing team and various program staff in communicating and building relationships with community members, their families, and organizational allies in the design and ongoing implementation of Mid-City CAN Momentum Team community organizing and advocacy campaigns. Duties include developing materials, data-entry, organizing program files and materials, phone-banking, emailing, texting, door-knocking (as assigned), assisting with meetings, events and actions, and other tasks as assigned. The available Base Builder position will be assigned to the ITCH Momentum Team’s campaign for the Youth Opportunity Pass (a regional no-cost transit pass for youth).

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Write program materials
  • Make social media posts
  • Conduct presentations and one-on-ones with consecutive bilingual communication
  • Conduct discussions between English and second language as assigned
  • Phone-banking (repeat phone calling from an organizational list of 100+ phone numbers) to community members and calling lists
  • Text-banking (repeat texting from an organizational list of 100+ phone numbers) to community members and calling lists
  • Email lists of community members
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite, Nation Builder Data Base, and other computer technologies
  • Conduct door-knocking (when allowable by prevailing health orders)
  • Complete program tasks and prep work as assigned by supervisor
  • Conduct outreach to schools, agencies, and collaborative partners that service to recruit members and conduct outreach; such and not limited to tabling or group presentations, tabling, and working directly with schools
  • Collect parent permission slips
  • Calling parents and families
  • Prepare materials for group work
  • Clearly articulate the efforts of Mid-City CAN and our community development strategy
  • Execute assigned campaign plans, project work plans, adhere to timelines and deadlines
  • Complete weekly data entry and progress reports in a timely manner
  • 40 hours per week as scheduled to meet organizational needs
  • Friday afternoon, weekend, and evening work required weekly to meet organizational needs
  • Attend all staff meetings, staff trainings, and retreats, and incorporate learnings into daily duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, administrators, and various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Community organizing or leadership training a plus, such as certificates from: Institute for Cultural Affairs, Gamaliel Foundation, PICO National Network, Center for Third World Organizing, Mid-West Academy, RePower, Yo!Cali, or comparable organizations
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish, Arabic (Palestinian, Iraqi or Syrian dialects), Somali, or Vietnamese, and a commitment to using bilingual language skills on a routine basis
  • Possess a passion for social justice that translates to daily interactions
  • Ability to self-direct, take initiative, work independently, and balance conflicting demands.
  • Ability to work in a highly diverse workplace across, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, perspectives, and economic status; ability to build relationships and interact with diverse people easily and contribute to a respectful workplace.
  • Flexible in adapting and learning new ideas and/or concepts, including ongoing training, workshops and/or learning opportunities.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends with occasional travel overnight required.
  • Access to reliable transportation and willing to use it for job-related tasks.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills required.
  • Commitment to personal professional growth and development.

Health, Safety and In-person Work

  • Strictly comply with all applicable public health orders and organizational safety protocols.
  • Work as part of a team among colleagues to assist with unforeseen health-related projects.
  • Conduct work in person as health orders allow (PPE provided as needed), most work is expected to be in-person with hybrid options.
  • Be flexible to adjust to changing safety protocols and health orders as needed.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: Work is performed in an office or community setting; employee regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment 6 to 8 hours per day; occasionally lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Position involves regular use of a computer and keyboard, telephone, and face-to-face communications; employee should be able to communicate clearly and professionally in all of these manners. Position works in community settings, may be standing at event table, and walks neighborhood for several hours on as needed basis. The employee may spend periods of time sitting, standing, or walking. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Compensation: The hourly wage range for this full-time, nonexempt position is $25-30 per hour,

commensurate with work experience, skills and educational background.
