Groundsperson

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Care for established lawns by watering, mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls.
• Care for natural turf fields, making sure the underlying soil has the required composition to allow proper drainage and to support the grasses used on the fields.
• Haul or spread topsoil or spread straw over seeded soil to hold soil in place.
• Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws.
• Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
• Operate vehicles and powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, snow blowers, chain saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.
• Use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, hand saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes.
• Maintain or repair tools, equipment, or structures, such as fences, or benches, using hand or power tools.
• General upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other grounds features including gathering and removal of litter.
• Shovel snow from walks, driveways, or parking lots and spread salt in those areas.
• Maintain gardens by trimming, decorating and cleaning flower beds.
• Rake, mulch, and compost leaves.
• Follow planned landscaping designs to determine where to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers or foliage.
• Planting of seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees, or shrubs and apply mulch for protection, using gardening tools.
• Use and maintain portable sprinkler systems, hoses, and irrigation systems, including winterizing of systems and starting them up in spring.
• Use irrigation methods to adjust the amount of water consumption and to prevent waste.
• Attach wires from planted trees to support stakes.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Work experience requirements:

• Excellent customer service skills.
• Working knowledge of landscaping equipment, tools, and materials.
• Must be available for emergency work.
• Bi-Lingual is a plus.

Education/Requirements:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

Testing:

• Drug screening, as permitted by, and consistent with, applicable law.

Physical Requirements:

Persons performing service in this position classification may routinely exert up to 100 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This type of work will involve regular walking or standing for extended periods of time. It may involve stooping or bending. Handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
