Art Studio / Gallery Technician


Knox College invites applications for the position of Art Studio and Gallery Technician. This position is a half-time (20 hours per week), non-benefited position. Reporting to the chair of the Art Department, this position assists in managing and maintaining the Whitcomb Art Center studio facilities. In addition, the position assists in management of exhibit installations at the Borzello Gallery. The successful candidate will be able to work in a diverse educational environment and be committed to the success of students from differing backgrounds and experiences.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Duties

  • Maintain close communication and work in collaboration with Art Department faculty.

  • Coordination of 4-6 Borzello Gallery exhibit installations annually.

  • Routine maintenance of gallery facility.

  • Coordination of student gallery monitors.

  • Assist faculty and oversee student workers in organization, cleaning, and general oversight of Whitcomb Art Center studios, equipment, and materials.

Marginal Duties

  • Depending on relevant experience, the position can include maintenance assistance for the ceramics studio, printmaking studio, wood shop, or metal shop.

  • Assist in coordinating exhibit openings and events.

  • Communication with other college staff, including Facility Services and ITS.

Exact responsibilities will ultimately be defined in relation to knowledge and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES:

Required Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in Studio Art or comparable credentials

Experience in gallery management or curatorial work.

Basic material knowledge and skills, painting skills, ability to work with a range of materials.

Commitment to student learning in a supportive and collaborative environment.


Preferred Qualifications

MFA

Graphic Design experience

Skills related to woodwork, painting, metals, ceramics

Background in exhibits planning or curatorial work.

Ability to provide technical support to art students.

Experience in repairs and maintenance of machines/tools.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Work Requirements

Work is split between two locations one block apart: the Borzello Gallery in the Ford Center for Fine Arts and the Whitcomb Art Center.

Physical Requirements


Work will consist of standing/walking, lifting objects of 50 lbs or more, and working in studios with dust and dirt.
