General Maintenance Technician

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

Assist in the performance of duties that keep the grounds, shrubs, turf areas, sidewalks, and pavement of the Academy maintained in an aesthetic and well-preserved manner. Assist in leaf and snow removal. Move furniture, equipment, etc. occasionally. Augment other trade shops when necessary.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Inspect property daily and determine work required. Report findings to supervisor for scheduling.
• Coordinate with supervisor ongoing planned beautification of the campus.
• Plant shrubs and flowers. Fertilize, water, prune and maintain as necessary.
• Occasionally perform minor tree pruning.
• Keep sidewalks, parking area, and turf in excellent appearance and litter free.
• Maintain designated turf areas to show condition. Apply pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and other turf maintenance products as required.
• Move/relocate light furnishings, i.e. chairs, tables, etc.
• Shovel snow from steps and walks.
• Plow/remove snow using various pieces of equipment.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required to meet emergency situations. Assist other trades and shops i.e. masonry, carpentry, painting, and electrical.
• Ability to work independently and with routine supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma is required.
• Must have and maintain Pennsylvania Department of Protection pesticide/herbicide licensing (VFMAC funded).
• Must be physically able to operate tools, machines, and light equipment.
• Must be able to climb and work from ladders, and high platforms, and work in confined attic/crawl spaces.
• Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
• Ability to perform basic maintenance on equipment.
• Valid PA driver’s license required
• Ability to operate power equipment i.e. lawn mower, chainsaw, string trimmer, etc.
• Knowledge of and ability to use the garden and turf-related hand tools.
• Ability to report to work early and stay late during periods of increased activity, i.e., preparation for special events, catch-up on grass mowing, snow removal operations, etc. Weekend work is required on occasion.
