Job Description
In the Road Crew position, you will maintain highways, municipal and rural roads and rights-of-way.  Duties include patching broken or eroded pavement, repairing guard rails, highway markers, and snow fences.  May also mow or clear brush from alongside road or plow snow and ice from roadway.  This is an intermediate level.  The employee performs a range of equipment operations and maintenance activities under general supervision in a developing capacity.

This position will be open until 3/13/2024.
 Job Duties and Responsibilities
Road Crew II:
  • Set out signs and cones around work areas to divert traffic. 
  • Flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead. 
  • Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment. 
  • Drive trucks to transport crews and equipment to work sites. 
  • Erect, install, or repair guardrails, road shoulders, berms, highway markers, warning signals, and highway lighting, using hand tools and power tools. 
  • Clean and clear debris from culverts, catch basins, drop inlets, ditches, and other drain structures. 
  • Drive heavy equipment and vehicles with adjustable attachments to sweep debris from paved surfaces, mow grass and weeds, remove snow and ice, and spread salt and sand. 
  • Haul and spread sand, gravel, and clay to fill washouts and repair road shoulders. 
  • Inspect, clean, and repair drainage systems, bridges, tunnels, and other structures. 
  • Remove litter and debris from roadways, including debris from rock and mud slides. 
  • Dump, spread, and tamp asphalt, using pneumatic tampers, to repair joints and patch broken pavement. 
  • Perform roadside landscaping work, such as clearing weeds and brush, and planting and trimming trees. 
  • Apply poisons along roadsides and in animal burrows to eliminate unwanted roadside vegetation and rodents. 
  • Measure and mark locations for installation of markers, using tape, string, or chalk. 
  • Paint traffic control lines and place pavement traffic messages, by hand or using machines. 
  • Apply oil to road surfaces, using sprayers. 
  • Inspect markers to verify accurate installation. 
  • Place and remove snow fences used to prevent the accumulation of drifting snow on highways.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires skill in the operation, use, and maintenance of heavy equipment, power tools, and hand tools;
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in performing maintenance, construction and repairs work;
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practice in at least one of the building trades and of street and road maintenance repair
  • Ability to perform the specialized semi-skilled maintenance and repair;
  • Ability to perform strenuous work, including heavy lifting;
  • Anticipate on call and respond to weather emergency events requiring road maintenance under adverse weather conditions;
  • Ability to deal with stress and emergency situations;
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to coordinate tasks and procedures with others;
  • Ability to comply with state and federal laws, as well as County policies and procedures;
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with other County employees and the general public to accomplish District 3 goals.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other County officials and departments, various state and federal agencies, and the general public.
  • Participation required in random drug and alcohol testing;
Willing to work outside of normal work hours, which are 10 hrs./day Monday- Thursday (start time varies between 7:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M. depending upon Daylight Savings Time).

Qualifications and/or Education Requirements
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED; at least six months – one-year road/bridge maintenance, driving or operating large trucks and heavy equipment on construction or maintenance projects or related experience.
  • Requires an Oklahoma Class A CDL, Type 1 driver’s license with air brake endorsement (or the ability to attain one within 90 days of hire).
  • Requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. Random drug and alcohol testing will occur during employment.
  • Requires completion of the following training/accreditations within six months of hire
· Flagger Certification
· First Aid/CPR
· Work Zone Safety Training

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Physical Demands: Essential functions involve significant physical demands related to repeated lifting of up to 75 pounds unassisted, 100 pounds with assistance rarely; carrying tools, materials, and equipment over rough terrain; climbing, reaching and bending. Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, drive, hear, bend, stoop, twist, and balance; need the ability to occasionally kneel and crawl; need the ability to grasp manual controls and the ability to use foot controls and operate gas, diesel, and electrically powered equipment.
  • Working Conditions: Work is on active construction sites involving pervasive hazards associated with heavy equipment and tool operations; speeding traffic; loud and constant noise; and regular exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and combustible materials. Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures. Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hard hats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.). Scheduled work hours may include early mornings or late evenings as well as occasional weekends and holidays.
  • Supervision Exercised: This position does not supervise other county Road Crew workers
  • Safety:  The employee shall be knowledgeable and follow Cleveland County’s safety policies and procedures.  The employee must immediately report any accidents, unusual occurrences, or any other safety-related issues to his/her supervisor.
