Job Summary

DJ&A is seeking a full-time, motivated and experienced Survey Crew Chief with 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in surveying or a related field, along with 2 to 5 years of experience working in the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). Under the Survey Project Manager’s direction, this position will coordinate activities of a field survey party, perform the most technically complex field surveying duties, and perform other duties as required. The ideal candidate will have experience working on design projects for state and/or federal clients as well as private clients.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead survey field crew on a variety of projects including boundary surveys, engineering surveys and construction layout
  • Responsible for the effective performance, training, and safety of all members of a field survey party
  • Perform records research for boundary and ALTA surveys
  • Perform data analysis and calculations under the supervision of a licensed land surveyor

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of land surveying principles and practices, including cadastral/boundary determination, legal descriptions, construction, ALTA, topographic surveying, and GIS
  • Experience using the following survey instruments and software is a plus: Trimble Robotic Total Stations, Trimble RTK and Static GNSS, Trimble Access Data Collectors, Trimble Business Center, UAV operation with imagery or LiDAR, Trimble High-Definition Laser Scanners, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Knowledge of the PLSS system
  • Knowledge of the BLM manual
  • Familiar with GLO field notes and plats
  • Knowledge of current ALTA standards
  • Knowledge of construction staking techniques and construction plan set interpretation
  • Ability to operate as a one-person team and manage field assistant as needed
  • Knowledge of field surveying practices and techniques
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Must be a strong leader and can work in a team atmosphere
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Must have strong logistics skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and communication skills
  • Highly proficient analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Independent, self-motivated, results-oriented, and dynamic
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and with geographically dispersed teams

Education and Experience:
  • Associates Degree in Surveying or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 to 5 years of experience in a related field
  • A minimum of 2 to 5 years of experience working in the Public Land Survey System (PLSS)
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Project experience with federal agencies (FHWA, NPS, USFS, NRCS, etc.) is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work may be performed both outdoors and in an office environment.
  • To perform the essential functions of the job, incumbents may be required to perform moderately strenuous tasks, such as lifting and carrying instruments weighing up to 75 pounds over rough terrain.
  • May be required to clear vegetation, dig holes, and pound stakes with hand tools.
  • Must be able to travel to various (and sometimes remote) project sites.
  • Must be able to access and navigate job sites and construction areas.
