Position Title: Protection & Control Applications Engineer

Reports to: Manager, Protection & Testing
Location: Atlanta, GA (*On-site)
* Incumbent must work in office in Atlanta four (4) days per week and may work remotely one (1) day per week with manager approval
Summary:
Protection Engineers at the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG Power) ensure the Safe and Reliable relay coordination protection for all 49 MEAG participants, providing efficient analyses and coordination supporting over millions of dollars in construction and maintenance projects each year.
Protection & Controls Engineers for MEAG Power also provide engineering analysis and support for real-time operators in meeting both routine events and responding to major storms and/or system emergencies.
Our Protection & Controls team works with a wide range of stakeholders to shape the design and integration of transmission facilities, solar and battery interconnections, large customer sites, and other major projects.
The Protection & Testing organization is a required NERC Reliability Function and is also critical to providing safe operating conditions for field personnel. The position requires in-depth knowledge of the power system, and tools, as well as expertise in transient analysis, transmission switching, protective relaying, and facility ratings.
The successful candidate will gain extensive knowledge of both Transmission and Distribution System protection practices, and will build strong working relationships with MEAG Participants, along with other cross-functional areas, and with external stakeholders.
The successful candidate will also have opportunities to train and develop subject matter and leadership expertise in many areas of the Georgia ITS System, Solar and Battery Integration, NERC and FERC Compliance, Physical and Cyber Security, Real-time Operations, SCADA system, Storm Restoration, General Support, and other areas.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Conduct studies using Computer Aided Protection Engineering (CAPE), and MathCAD to evaluate impedance, short circuit, and relay settings calculations.
- Prepare relay sheets for field implementation and testing.
- Review Single Line Metering and Relaying Diagrams, and determine the required control schemes and protective relays.
- Provide technical support and recommendations to Field Engineers, other departments within MEAG, and MEAG Participants.
- Review transmission relay operations, identify mis-operations, and suggest corrective action.
- Maintain underfrequency load shed database, and file MIDAS reports with SERC to capture whether or not there were relay mis-operations.
- Assist Engineering in the development of MEAG Standard protection panels.
- Represent MEAG Power on ITS Working Groups (Relay working group, FIDVR working group, etc.) and SERC working groups (UFLS working group, Relay working group, etc.).
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Provide daily support to the O&M department by performing contingency modeling and analysis as needed, and support restoration efforts during storms, Energy Emergency Alerts, and significant system events.
- Provide training and mentoring to less experienced team members.
- Shape operating processes and procedures to promote design and integration of transmission facilities, solar and battery interconnections, large customer sites and other major projects.
Qualifications
- B.S. Electrical Engineering (or other relevant) degree with comparable power system experience required.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license prefered
- Experience in one or more Power System areas (Planning, Protection & Control, SCADA, Fault Analysis/Power Quality) is a plus.
- Knowledge of applicable NERC Standards
- Minimum five years experience in Protection & Control.
- Must be able to read and understand electrical control drawings.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- Must be able to perform these duties with minimum or no supervision
