Temporary, Part-time: 20-25 hours per week

Pay Rate: $20/hour, non-exempt

Benefits: CA Sick Time Off

Organization size: 50+ employees

Reports to: Lead Developer

Location(s):  In-person at one of the five Digital NEST Centers: Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy, or Stockton. This position is not eligible to work remotely.

Age requirements: Internship positions are reserved for young adults ages 18 - 24 years of age.
 

The job offer will be contingent upon the successful completion and passing of a background check.

 

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

Digital NEST is a workforce development center that has welcomed hundreds of youth from working-class, farmworker communities to develop the technical and professional skills they need to achieve their dreams. It is an exciting time for the NEST as we are on the precipice of expanding to a total of five communities across Northern California by the end of 2026. Digital NEST has centers in the heart of Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy, Modesto, and soon to launch in Stockton. 

 

JOB OVERVIEW:

bizzNEST is the digital media agency of Digital NEST. bizzNEST offers a paid, 1-year internship program that provides real world professional training. Through this program, Interns hone and develop their technical and professional skills, gain real professional experience by working with clients, build professional level portfolios and resumes, and become competitively qualified for entry-level, career-focused employment.

bizzNEST is looking for a motivated Senior intern who can assist with our web development projects, and  is a quick learner and has a passion for this field. 

The Senior Intern will work closely under the supervision of the Lead Developer to guide a small team of intern peers on client web development projects. They will build and maintain websites using WordPress, PHP, HTML, and CSS, or React and Node.js, including performing routine maintenance for client websites, troubleshooting, and debugging. They will be developing  products for external clients as well as working within the organization as an in-house developer. They will also collaborate across-functional teams for projects, including the Web Design team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Web Development (50%):

  • Build and maintain websites using WordPress, PHP, HTML, CSS, or React and Node.js.
  • Conduct client training sessions on website usage and maintenance at the end of contracts.
  • Conduct testing and debugging of web applications to ensure optimal performance and functionality across different browsers and devices.
  • Collaborate with design interns to ensure seamless implementation of design elements and user experience enhancements, maintaining consistency and alignment with project objectives and user requirements.
  • Contribute to team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and knowledge sharing activities to foster collaboration and continuous learning within the team.
  • Lead deployments and launch projects with the help of the supervisor.

Web Project Management (25%):

  • Work closely with Lead Developer to deliver and build client projects.
  • Implement website changes based on client and Lead Developer feedback.
  • Research and collaborate with the supervisor/project manager to troubleshoot technical issues and implement solutions.
  • Lead a team of general interns through the web development process, overseeing tasks, timelines, quality, and fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Break down project scopes into tasks and delegate tasks effectively using project management tools like GitHub Project Boards or Asana.
  • Monitor project progress, troubleshoot technical errors, and ensure adherence to quality standards outlined by the Lead Developer.
  • Coordinate with team members for efficient collaboration.
  • Manage project documentation and communication channels.
  • Collaborate with the supervisor/project manager to track and report progress on website projects, utilizing GitHub for version control and collaboration.
  • Mentor General Interns to support their skill development and professional growth:
    • Pair programming with general interns,
    • Help general interns debug code and technical issues,
    • Conduct regular code reviews and provide constructive feedback to general interns to improve coding practices and maintain code quality.

Other (25%):

  • Lead and guide a team of general interns.
  • Log work and progress on project management (PM) software such as Asana and customer relationship management (CRM) software such as Salesforce, if necessary.
  • Communicate across-teams through email, chat and in-person.
  • Attend meetings and participate in critiques.
  • Collaborate with staff members from other departments, as necessary.
  • Attend and actively participate in client meetings.
  • Participate in applicable certification programs, workshops, and courses for continued skill development. 
  • Participate in the Mentorship Program. 
  • Seek and participate in professional development activities and share with the intern cohort.
  • Support the onboarding process for new interns during seasonal transitions.
 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: 

  • Some experience in web development is required. College seniors or recent graduates majoring in Computer Science, Engineering, or Data Analytics. Self-taught individuals are welcome if they can demonstrate their knowledge and proficiency in web development.

Technical Skills / Experience: 

  • Proficiency in building websites in WordPress or a JavaScript framework (e.g., React, VueJS, Angular, NodeJS, etc.).
  • Strong fundamental understanding of web development including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (JS).
  • Proficiency in utilizing git for version control.
  • Experience building websites from inception to completion, showcasing the understanding of the entire development process.
    • Note: You do not need to know best practices or will be expected to have a full understanding of all deployment processes/techniques.
    • Note:  Personal, professional or college projects are considered valuable experience for this position.
  • Some familiarity with CMS frameworks, SQL databases, and responsive web development techniques, such as:
    • Wordpress, mysql, postgres, sqlite etc.
    • Bootstrap, Tailwind, Scss, Flexbox etc.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify and communicate solutions effectively.
  • Basic understanding of UX/UI design principles and concepts.
  • Proficiency in using version control tools like GitHub, Bitbucket or GitLab for collaboration and version tracking.
  • Experience in reviewing PRs (Pull Requests) and providing constructive feedback to team members.

PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with PHP or Node.js for backend development.
  • Prior experience in project management or leadership roles.
  • Knowledge of Figma fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices and web analytics tools for optimizing website performance.
  • Familiarity with e-commerce platforms like WooCommerce for online store development.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices for web application security.
  • Knowledge of Agile or Scrum methodologies for project development and collaboration.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform for deployment and hosting.
