JOB TITLE: Student Services Coordinator (Special Education Supervisor)

DIVISION: Youth Services

DEPARTMENT: SER YouthBuild Learning Academy (SER Metro Charter School)

LOCATION: Samaritan Center (East) and Youth Reengagement Center (Southwest)

REPORTS TO: Principal

FLSA STATUS: Exempt/Salaried

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time Regular

JOB SUMMARY: The primary responsibility of the Student Services Coordinator is to coordinate and supervise special education programs/services. The coordinator will provide district wide leadership for effective program development and be responsible for evaluating and monitoring programs and services to assure implementation consistent with state and federal mandates. The diverse nature of programs and services coordinated will require ongoing planning and coordination with building administrators and leadership staff within the SER YouthBuild Learning Academy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Embrace the District’s mission, vision and collective commitments in order to make decisions that reflect the District’s philosophy that places the needs of children and their education first.
  2. Facilitate the development and supervision of special education programs, services, and staff for both campuses.
  3. Assists in the recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of special education teachers and staff.
  4. Ensure that the programs and services coordinated are in compliance with specialized state and federal requirements.
  5. Provide leadership to programs to assist staff and parents in evaluating student’s educational needs and in modifying or selecting programs and activities to meet these needs.
  6. Coordinate staff training focused on curriculum, special education policies and procedures and student information portal.
  7. Serve a liaison between the school, families, and community resources to ensure comprehensive and appropriate services are provided to students with disabilities.
  8. Stay current on laws, regulations and best practices related to special education services.
  9. Serve at the district’s 504 liaison.
  10. Provide assistance to building administrators and other leadership staff in the development of programs, evaluation of staff and refinement of procedures.
  11. Experience with implementation of MiAccess and possesses an understanding of Special Education Indicators and secondary transition.
  12. Input of data for special education services into the student information system
  13. Commit to the goals and objectives of the program and to the mission of SER Metro-Detroit and SER YouthBuild Learning Academy.
  14. Contribute to the team effort by performing other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Yes

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Eligibility for approval as a supervisor of special education by the State of Michigan under the State Special Education Code or eligible for temporary approval is required.
  2. Master’s degree in an area of Special Education with at least 5 years of experience.
  3. Demonstrated leadership experience in special education program development and coordination.
  4. Previous administrative or leadership experience is preferred.
  5. Experience in providing special education online learning services is preferred.
  6. Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of low-income students, understanding cross-cultural values regarding education, and the ability to establish rapport with the target population.
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  8. Knowledge at the evaluation and analysis level of special education and related rules, regulations, and guidelines for IDEA, MARSE and 504.
  9. Successful experience in planning and providing professional development on a variety of topics including but not limited to: IEP compliance, process and procedures, behavior and Multi-Tier Student Support (MTSS) and academic strategies.
  10. A high degree of initiative and the ability to work without constant supervision are required. Must have experience working in team settings, collaborate effectively with others, function well under pressure, manage multiple tasks concurrently, and always remain professional.
  11. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  12. Must be eligible to pass a background check, including fingerprints.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time, and have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment. Must be able to lift a minimum of 10 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. - This job operates in a normal school environment with a noise level, which is at times, moderately loud with little discomfort due to noise, dirt, dust and the like. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
