Hydraulics Research Engineer

Title: Hydraulics Research Engineer (multiple levels)

Position Summary:

Midnight Sun is seeking resumes from qualified Hydraulics Research Engineers of multiple levels (entry level through senior level) to support a Federal research contract in McLean, VA.

The HYD-REs shall be capable of setting up and conducting computational modeling, or performing physical experiments, soil erosion testing and the mechanical design, fabrication, automation and control of laboratory experimental set-ups and testing apparatuses, or performing the design, fabrication and testing of smart systems (3D printing, robotics, smart sensors, etc.) for hydraulics research focus areas listed above.

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Set up and conduct computational modeling, perform physical experiments, soil erosion testing and the mechanical design, fabrication, automation and control of laboratory experimental set-ups and testing apparatuses, or performing the design, fabrication and testing of smart systems (3D printing, robotics, smart sensors, etc.) for hydraulics research focus areas listed above.
• Support the procurement of equipment and supplies and fabricate and test smart systems (robotics, smart sensors, etc.) for hydraulics research.
• Conduct advanced flow visualization using Ultra-Sonic Doppler Velocimetry (UDV), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), Volumetric PIV (VPIV), Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) for hydraulics research and will improve the advanced flow visualization capabilities of the Hydraulics Laboratory or will perform CFD/CSM modeling for hydraulics research.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechatronics Engineering (convergence of mechanical and electronic systems)
• Laboratory experience as an undergraduate research assistant in a laboratory, intern experience in a laboratory, or equivalent thereof.
• Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance and site access.

Preferred Requirements:

• Master's Degree or PhD in Civil (Hydraulics), Mechatronics, or Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science
• 1-2 years of research experience or 3-5 years of hands-on experience managing and conducting hydraulics/sediment transport/fluid mechanic/CFD (Computational Fluid Mechanics)/CSM (Computational Structural Mechanics) investigations.
• Experience with project management, project tracking, and/or staff utilization.
