Commitment: 16-24 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months. The weekly schedule is flexible to accommodate class and work schedules.

Position Summary:  

The Marketing Intern will report directly to the Senior Marketing and Communications Manager for at least 16-24 hours per week on-site with hybrid of being stationed at Butterfly Pavilion zoo and offsite facility. The intern will perform various support tasks to support the Senior Marketing & Communications Manager and the marketing and communications department and leadership, including, but not limited to, researching various marketing efforts and opportunities locally/regionally, pulling various editorial calendars to identify paid marketing and advertising opportunities, identifying guerrilla marketing tactics including hotels, local entertainment centers, restaurants, etc., community calendars, broadcast, radio, etc. for various promotional efforts across different departments including education and community programs, private events, and updating tracking grids.

Upon orientation completion, the Marketing Intern's supervisor will review the intern's work plan with them outlining summer goals by month. Interns, regardless of their title, are required to develop a term project and presentation. Additional information for this project will be provided upon starting.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Research and identify opportunities for marketing efforts from various editorial calendars, social events (conferences, tabling/canvassing opportunities)
  • Leverage approved promotional materials for calendar listings/posting.
  • Work with Senior Marketing & Communications Manager to assist with marketing efforts ahead of upcoming monthly promotions/campaigns
  • Research vertical markets and industries to help identify marketing and communications opportunities (for education/adult and youth programs/Environmental and Ecological Services (EES), and private events.
  • Assist with developing materials for marketing plans including tactics, personas, etc. The marketing intern will also help with developing copy for Butterfly Pavilion website, posters, and other platforms.
  • Utilize available data to provide suggestions on the best marketing tactics
  • Identify national and local news trends and opportunities for BP to stay relevant through various marketing efforts
  • Identify and categorize potential conferences to attend and finding speaking engagements for BP experts (local and national) working with Senior Director of Communications and Marketing
  • Create PPT slides as requested
  • Provide miscellaneous support for needs from marketing and communications team
  • Attend on-site events, as needed

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Marketing, Integrated Marketing & Communications, Communications, and/or Advertising major
  • Writing/editing skills
  • Email marketing experience is a plus
  • Research experience and skills
  • Microsoft Excel experience to create spreadsheets

Additional Requirements:

  • Must have reliable transportation to work (both Butterfly Pavilion and the offsite office)

The employee is occasionally required to reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Employee should be able to lift, carry and items up to 50 lbs.
