What does a Design Intern do during the summer?

A Design Intern in the summer typically assists design teams with various creative tasks, such as creating graphics, editing images, participating in brainstorming sessions, and supporting ongoing design projects. Interns gain hands-on experience with design tools and software, learn about the workflow of professional design environments, and often have the opportunity to contribute their ideas to real-world projects. This role is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates to build their portfolios, develop industry connections, and learn new skills under the guidance of experienced designers.

What types of projects can a Design Intern expect to work on during a typical summer internship?

As a Design Intern during the summer, you can expect to work on a range of projects that may include assisting with branding initiatives, creating marketing collateral, supporting digital or web design efforts, and collaborating on user interface (UI) mockups. Interns often partner closely with senior designers and cross-functional teams such as marketing, product, or development. This hands-on experience provides exposure to the full design process, from brainstorming and concept development to final execution, offering valuable learning opportunities and the chance to build a diverse portfolio.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Intern (Summer), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Intern (Summer), you generally need foundational skills in visual design, creativity, and familiarity with design principles, often supported by coursework or a portfolio. Proficiency in tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and basic understanding of design systems or prototyping tools (such as Figma or Sketch) are typically expected. Strong communication, openness to feedback, and a collaborative mindset help you stand out in team environments. These skills and qualities ensure you can contribute effectively to projects, learn quickly, and adapt to the fast-paced, iterative nature of design work.

What Does a Design Intern for the Summer Do?

A design intern summer program is an excellent way for a student to gain hands-on experience through a temporary job in their field. As a summer design intern, you work under the guidance of a senior member and learn and fulfill the responsibilities of the internship, which can be about fashion design, interior design, or graphic design. You receive training, practice designing, and create work both on your own and in collaboration with your mentor. An internship usually counts as credits toward your degree. The duties vary depending on the position, which ends in the summer before you go back to school.
