Sophomore Summer Internship information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sophomore Summer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sophomore Summer Intern, you typically need strong academic performance, foundational knowledge in your field of study, and a willingness to learn. Familiarity with common office software, research tools, or industry-specific applications may be required, depending on the internship focus. Proactive communication, adaptability, and teamwork are crucial soft skills that help interns stand out. These competencies enable interns to contribute effectively, absorb new information quickly, and make a positive impression in a professional environment.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a Sophomore Summer Internship?

As a Sophomore Summer Intern, you can expect to work on a mix of individual assignments and collaborative projects that are designed to give you exposure to your chosen field. While responsibilities vary depending on the company and department, interns typically assist with real-world tasks such as data analysis, research, process improvement, or supporting ongoing team initiatives. You may also attend team meetings, participate in training sessions, and network with professionals, providing a comprehensive introduction to both the technical and interpersonal aspects of the workplace. The experience is structured to help you build foundational skills and gain insight into potential career paths within the organization.

What is a Sophomore Summer Internship?

A Sophomore Summer Internship is a temporary work experience offered to college students who have completed their sophomore (second) year. These internships typically take place during the summer and last 8-12 weeks, providing students with hands-on experience in a professional setting. The goal is to help students explore potential career paths, develop industry-relevant skills, and build a professional network. Sophomore internships are often more exploratory than junior internships and can improve a student's chances of securing more advanced positions in the future.

Job description

Summer Interns at imi will be fully immersed in the business unit to which they will be reporting. All interns will be given the opportunity to job shadow, work under direct supervision, and work independently within their business unit. Interns will also be provided "Field Trip" opportunities throughout the summer to learn more about the broader imi business, and Interns will also be responsible for completing a summer internship project.

  • The primary responsibility for Interns will be to actively participate in all phases of the Intern experience; including job shadowing, supervised work, and independent work experiences. Active participation in these opportunities will be the best way for Interns to maximize their learning experience through the course of the internship.
  • Interns will be expected to report to work on time every day at their assigned work location. Intern will be required to supply their own reliable transportation to the assigned internship location
  • Interns will be expected to participate in any and all "Field Trip" opportunities. These opportunities are designed to broaden an Intern's understanding of the many aspects of imi's business which we believe will help the Intern be more successful in their assigned business unit.

  • Interns will be responsible for completing a small summer project in which they will propose at least one area in which imi could improve the business. Interns will be required to present their project to a panel of Executives and other leaders within the company.
  • Must be enrolled in a post-secondary education program at an accredited institution. Must have a strong work ethic and must be able to commit to being at work every day throughout the course of the summer of 2025.

  • Must have completed sophomore year of college and must have completed at least one year of coursework specific to declared major.

  • Experience using Google Suite of applications is a plus.
  • Could vary depending on the business unit in which the Intern is assigned.
