JOB DESCRIPTION                                              

TITLE:                        Baler

DEPARTMENT:       Sustainability                                                                                                    

REPORTS TO:          Director of Sustainability                                                

FLSA STATUS:         Non-Exempt          

                                  

Job Summary

Run the cardboard baling machine: Turn on baler. Place cardboard in bottom of baler and close door firmly. Place clothing, cardboard, stuffed animals, or plastic in mouth of baler and distribute evenly and PUSH down button. Repeat the process until FULL light comes on. Place cardboard on top of bale. Depress bale to hold; place wire on bale and tie off properly. PUSH off button. A licensed forklift driver will remove the bale with forklift. The baler operator reports to the Director of Sustainability.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Meet production quota per day.
  • Choose cardboard that fits bottom of baler.
  • Place on bottom of baler floor and close door.
  • Place clothing (cardboard/stuffed animals/plastic) in mouth of baler, spreading evenly.
  • Push ‘DOWN’ button, wait until baler releases, push ‘UP’ button – refill and spread evenly.
  • Repeat above steps as many times as needed to complete bale and ‘FULL’ light comes on.
  • Place cardboard on top of bale. Press down’ place wires around bale and tie wires. Press ‘UP’ button.
  • A licensed forklift driver will remove the bale from the baler.
  • Above steps will be repeated during workday.
  • Be responsible for operation and upkeep of baler and bailing area. Keep products, supplies and equipment in order.
  • Report all problems or concerns to Director of Sustainability immediately.
  • Keep the work area clean, safe, and free of SAFETY hazards ALWAYS.
  • Practice SAFETY; ALWAYS watch out for co-workers.
  • All other duties assigned by Director of Sustainability
  • Able to exercise discretion and independent judgement on decision-making.


Education and/or Experience

  • Must be able to understand and carry out instructions.
  • Able to count and do simple math.
  • Able to read, write and complete simple paperwork.
  • Able to make decisions on own
  • Prior work experience in baling is helpful.
  • Job can be learned by on-the-job work training and one-on-one supervision.


Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Licensed Forklift operator is helpful.
  • Must be able to make simple decisions.
  • Must be able to concentrate and stay on task.

Physical Demands

  • Must have satisfactory eyesight.
  • Exposed to physical occupational risk (cuts, burns)
  • Able to bend, push, pull 30-100 pounds.
  • Able to lift 15-30 pounds above shoulder level.


Working Environment

  • Hot in summer months
  • Normal lighting and production area conditions
  • Physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes
  • Workspace limited by equipment and materials necessary for production.
  • NOT to restrict movement. Worker controls space and cleanliness.
  • NO fire or SAFETY hazards. The aisle way and breaker box is to be clear at all times.
