Doral Dialysis Center is seeking a Patient Care Technician PCT to join our team.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) is responsible for the general direct care of the patients receiving
hemodialysis under the direction of the Medical Director.

Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Nurse Manager, performs duties in the care and treatment of
patients on maintenance dialysis.
Performs in accordance with the established rules, regulations and standards of practice of the facility.
Abides by all Federal, State and local regulations and laws relating to the operation of an ESRD facility.


Specific Duties:
1. Preparation of dialysis machine.
2. Priming extracorporeal circuit.
3. Obtains and records pre and post-dialysis treatment data

  • vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature)
  • Weights
  • calculate fluid removal based on an estimated dry weight

4. Reports any abnormalities of vital signs and weights to the charge nurse.
5. Initialization of dialysis treatments via AVG and/or AVF under the supervision of a Registered
Nurse.
6. Constant observation, monitoring and documenting of blood pressure of dialysis parameters for
all access types as assigned during treatment as per unit protocol.
7. Sets parameters for treatment (Calculates transmembrane pressure, BFR, pressure limits).
8. Reports any unusual presenting symptoms or untoward effects of treatment to the charge nurse.
9. Administer bolus of normal saline in response to hypotension or cramps and inform charge
nurse.
10. Obtain blood samples as directed.
11. Understands and is able to operate the centrifuge machine.
12. Prepares blood samples for transportation to the laboratory.
13. Is able to operate and troubleshoot individual dialysis machines.
14. Terminates dialysis treatments via AVG and/or AVF under the supervision of an RN.
15. Capable of checking the conductivity, temperature and PH of the dialysate.
16. Capable of checking for residual Sodium Hypochlorite.
17. Capable of checking the water system for Chlorine/Chloramine.
18. Capable of checking the water system as per re-established parameters and will report any
deviations to the charge nurse.
19. Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to mix and transfer Bicarbonate in the central delivery
system.
20. Disinfection of Bicarbonate Tank and Hemodialysis Machine.
21. Checking the water system for chlorine/Chloramine.
22. Check the water system as per established guidelines and parameters, document on log sheet and
report any deviations to the charge nurse.
23. Ensuring the enforcement of all policies and procedures including the patient’s bill of rights.
24. Proper handling and storage of bio-hazardous waste and chemicals.
25. Disinfection of cleaning of equipment surrounding and including patient chairs.
26. Assist with lifting, turning, moving, positioning, and transferring patients.
27. May perform other duties and assist in areas of the department as directed by the nurse manager, RN, Administrator, and Medical Director.
28. Have knowledge of emergency procedures. Able to function in an emergency situation under
the director of the person in charge:

  • Understand CPR protocols, and can assist during an emergency situation
  • Communicate information regarding the patient’s condition to the MD, RN, LPN


Relationships:
1. Keeps the Nurse Manager or charge nurse informed of any unusual patient problems or
complications.
2. Keep the Nurse Manager or charge nurse informed of the operational status of all equipment on
an ongoing basis.
3. Respects the confidentiality of all patients.
4. Maintains a professional and functional attitude with co-workers in the presence of patients and
others.
5. Maintains a cooperative working relationship with all co-workers, both intrafacility and
interfacility with patients and with others with whom contact is made.
6. Willfully assists in the orientation and teaching of new employees and students.
7. Maintain established Standards of Caring Behavior.


Physical, Emotional, and Sensory Requirements:
1. Must be in good mental and physical condition.
2. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.
3. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
4. Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work
effectively with patients, staff, family members, visitors, and support regulatory agencies.
5. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
6. Must demonstrate a caring attitude and be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly,
emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
7. The employee may occasionally be required to move, with assistance, machines and equipment of
up to 200 lbs., and may lift chemical and water solutions of up to 30 lbs. up as high as 5 feet.
8. Must be able to assist in the evacuation of patients.
9. Must be able to climb several flights of stairs in an emergency.
10. Must adhere to the dress code and maintain a high level of personal hygiene and cleanliness.
11. Must be able to operate dialysis-specific equipment.
12. Ability to read, write, understand and speak English and basic math skills in a clear and concise
manner.
13. Must have communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide variety of
individuals.


Standards Of Caring Behavior:
1. On all occasions, approach the patients, families, and all visitors in a humanistic, kind
courteous, and friendly manner with respect to their rights and concerns.
2. To reduce patients, families, and visitors' anxieties by introducing yourself, explaining all
procedures and possible delays in schedule, orienting them to the Facility, and maintaining a neat,
professional appearance.


Minimum Qualifications: Education and Training Requirements:
• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Dialysis Technician Certification by a state-certified program or a national commercially
available certification program required per these guidelines:
-If employed on or before October 14th, 2008, national certification must be obtained before April
15, 2010.
-If employed after October 14th, 2008, certification must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
• Current CPR certification required (or must be obtained within 60 days of employment).
• Previous dialysis experience preferred.
• Completed training program approved by the medical director and the governing body as required
by CMS guidelines prior to operating the water treatment system required.
• Basic computer skills required.
