About Us The St. Louis Jewish Community Center (the J) has been providing excellent health and cultural experiences for the entire community for over 140 years. We are hiring for a Full-Time Cook in our Kitchen.


Summary:

Kitchen J Assistant – cook prepares food for our Early Childhood, Adult Day Center and Home Delivery participants, as well as catering. This position works collaboratively with the entire staff to ensure an effective and professional kitchen.


Responsibilities:

  • Prep and prepare food for Early Childhood, home delivery and Adult Day Center. Ensure portions and food follows established menus. Assist to manage heated food in ovens and warmers, preps and gathers all items for Food Service programs.
  • Responsible for all aspects of baked goods including but not limited to breads, muffins, pastries, cookies, mousses, for program consumption and catering.
  • Able to produce from-scratch products, accurately follow recipes and make pre-prepared items according to their instructions.
  • Able to complete all food properly including portioning of poultry, beef, and fish to required size.
  • Take the lead with production, organization and display of desserts and baked items during events.
  • Assist with Early Childhood and Adult Day Center meal service as needed – prep and gather all items for Fox EC, portion breakfast and lunch food, label, and wrap, as necessary. Plate where and when necessary. Deliver to ADC and EC and other areas of building when necessary. Assist with snack preparation and delivery.
  • Assist with catering food preparation and service. Assist to with placing and removing heated food in ovens and warmers, assists with packaging and labeling.
  • Assist with Lunch Plus program in the summer for EC and Day Camp, if needed.
  • Maintain sanitation standards in kitchen and storerooms. Maintain Health Departments sanitation guidelines for staff working in food preparation operations. Assist with dishwashing and cleaning of kitchen area.
  • Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively with all kitchen staff, Chef, management, and office personnel.
  • Adhere to Kashrut laws.
  • Assist with supply orders as requested.
  • Provide food related stickers when appropriate.
  • Assist in storing of food and supplies, organization, and cleanliness.
  • Distribute food and supplies to other departments.
  • Assist with maintaining all storage areas and rotation of stock.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of items in refrigerators, freezers, and storerooms.



Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Culinary training or education is desired.
  • Experience in quantity food production is required.
  • Must have ability to read recipes and prepare food under the direction of Kitchen J Manager & Head Chef. Assist with side dishes, sous related dishes, and other food service Kitchen J Manager & Head Chef is not busy with.
  • Knowledge of weights and measurements necessary for proper food preparation is required.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for food production is required. Able to open cans, bottles with electric or hand can opener.
  • Good physical condition, including the ability to stand for prolonged periods, lift up to 25lbs, bend, stretch, and walk to other areas on campus. Able to move in the kitchen in a safe and efficient manner. Get and carry boxes off of shelves, put on carts to bring to other areas of kitchen. Able to stand for long periods of times up to and including 8 hours a day. One ½ lunch and two 10-minute breaks coordinated through the Kitchen J Manager & Head Chef.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with people of all ages. Customer service and hospitality focus is important. Comply with any request from clients to satisfy program needs. Work as a team with other Food Service staff.
  • Serv Safe Certification is desired or willingness to gain certification.
  • Valid MO Chauffeur’s / CDL license is required.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to perform the job is necessary.

Kitchen J staff are required to have Hepatitis A vaccines (provided if necessary) and may be required to register on the MO Family Care Safety Registry. Employees are subject to pre-employment background screenings and if driving, physical and drug test. Drivers of agency vehicles are part of our random drug testing pool.
