Job Description

Job Summary: The Director of Undergraduate Admission provides leadership and management for relevant admission operations and oversees the development and execution of a comprehensive recruitment strategy that supports new student enrollment goals for first-year and transfer students.

The Director of Undergraduate Admission reports to the Vice President for Enrollment Management. This position ensures that maximum institutional synergy is realized through collaboration with multiple University departments, and that recruitment activities are consistent with the overall mission, objectives, and strategic plan of the University. The Director participates in the full range of college admission responsibilities, which may include traveling to secondary schools, community colleges and college fairs; administrative duties; interviewing prospective students; reviewing applications and assuming other projects as assigned.

The Director engages in program planning and implementation, manages multiple budgets, and sets office priorities in consultation with the VP for Enrollment Management. The position is responsible for the direct supervision of admission counseling staff, including ongoing training, evaluation and professional development. The Director supports other directors and the VP and positively influences peers, staff and direct reports. The position has a high degree of visibility and contact with persons on and off campus, building and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders to advance recruitment initiatives. The Director may serve as an admission representative on select university committees. The Director will demonstrate understanding and sensitivity to the needs of all students and perform duties in accordance with the values of a private comprehensive institution.

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities: The following duties are not to be considered a complete list of duties and responsibilities assigned to this position.

  • Develop, implement and manage recruitment strategies designed to meet enrollment needs for undergraduate programs, including student search, prospect management, territory development and yield efforts that attract an inclusive and talented class of undergraduates.
  • Supervision of students and staff. Conducts annual reviews for direct reports and provides feedback for consistent efficiency and team effectiveness.
  • Serves as admission representative on select University committees.
  • Adheres to all college and departmental policies.
  • Assists with the design and delivery of admission-related promotional materials in multiple formats, including print, text, web and social media.
  • Utilizes the CRM (Slate) for queries, application review, event planning, visit activities and data processing.
  • Collaborates with key university stakeholders to advance recruitment initiatives, which includes Athletics, Student Services, University Relations and Academic Affairs.
  • Collaborates with Financial Aid to ensure prospective students receive timely and accurate financial aid offers, aid comparison reviews and tuition exchange offers.
  • Evaluates and collaborates with the VP in the selection of candidates for admission and the strategic awarding of certain scholarships, including contributions to data collection and the design of predictive models to inform such efforts.
  • Manages operating budgets for first-year and transfer recruitment.
  • Serves on the Enrollment Leadership Team to establish new admission and recruitment initiatives, set yearly tuition and enrollment goals, and collaborate on best practices.
  • Adheres to all college and departmental policies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • At least five years of middle-management admission experience.
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups. Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to cultivate effective working relationships with administrators, academic leadership, faculty, students, community leadership, public officials, funding agencies, and members of the community at large.
  • Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions. Demonstrated competency in data-based decision making. Statistical background helpful.
  • A commitment to the value and mission of a comprehensive education.
  • Ability to travel for recruiting purposes and work evenings and some weekends.
  • Must possess and maintain valid driver's license, pass the University’s Decision Driving Program, and maintain insurability under the University’s vehicle insurance plan.
  • Well-developed understanding of issues and best practices in higher education recruiting and admission.
  • Strong managerial skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Strong understanding of current and emerging marketing and communications tools appropriate to prospective undergraduate and parents.
  • Proven creative, strategic, and innovative approach to student recruitment.
  • Strong knowledge and comfort with technology and the data tools required for associated metrics, such as applicant management systems/CRM (Slate) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Results-oriented professional with demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate effectively while working with minimum supervision.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Other than admission travel responsibilities, work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. No or very limited physical effort required. No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
