Job Description

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.

The Senior Manager of Software Technologies is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing and driving the software engineering process within the organization. This position is accountable for the successful delivery of high-quality software products and involves managing teams of software engineers, managing relationships with technology consultants and vendors, and setting strategic direction. The Senior Manager collaborates with cross-functional teams to establish development timelines and oversee the execution of software projects from inception to delivery. The position is responsible for ensuring continuous (24x7x365) ongoing operations of software products, with oversight and participation in on-call rotations for mission critical applications. Additionally, the role involves providing technical guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and excellence in software engineering practices. The Senior Manager plays a critical role in shaping the future of our software products and driving the company's overall success through technology innovation and leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Lead multiple software engineering teams to successful delivery of business outcomes.
  • Manage the budget for multiple software engineering teams with ongoing focus on personnel, vendor, and capital expenditures.
  • Build strong working relationships with business leaders to ensure software engineering teams meet expectations and contribute to achievement of business goals.
  • Collaborate with IT and business leaders to influence strategic plans and ensure software engineering teams ongoing alignment with strategic direction.
  • Support and facilitate innovative software technologies and practices to test new ideas within bounded cost and time frames.
  • Work with product and project management to design, manage, and execute product roadmaps.
  • Ensure continuous (24x7x365) ongoing operations of software products, with oversight and participation in on-call rotations for mission critical applications

Talent Management

  • Develop workforce strategy for multiple software engineering teams to meet the organization's current and future needs through developing, hiring, and sourcing talent.
  • Manage resource allocation across teams to maximize business impact of resources ad ensure each team has the skills and capabilities needed to achieve its objectives.
  • Manage software engineering talent, playing a key role in performance management and compensation processes, role and competency definition, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Partner with Human Resources to create learning and development opportunities aligned to the organization's skill and capability needs, and to provide rewarding career paths for software engineering staff.
  • Recruit and hire talent to address new needs and skill gaps.
  • Facilitate collaboration and partnership across teams and stakeholders.
  • Build a culture that supports learning, collaboration, transparency, and inclusiveness.
  • Manage employee engagement and promote a compelling employee value proposition to retain software engineering talent.

Oversight for Software Engineering Activities

  • Champion best practices and modern software development methods and tools.
  • Lead multiple software engineering teams to set goals for improving code quality, maintainability, security, and performance. Monitor progress against these goals..
  • Manage collaboration with Infrastructure and Operations to ensure software performs well in production and meets SLAs.
  • Manage collaboration with Enterprise Security to ensure software is effectively secured and that risks are mitigated.
  • Oversee management of relationships with consultants, vendors, and contractors. Support negotiation of statements of work and business terms with suppliers.
  • Oversee DevSecOps processes and practices, including test automation, secure development processes, and continuous integration.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does possess supervisory responsibility and there are non-supervisory employees who report to this position

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or related field. Master's degree (M.S./MBA) preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience.
  • Strong talent management skills including talent development, coaching, mentoring, and team motivation.
  • Experience leading geographically distributed teams.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong cross-functional partnerships at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to understand and drive business objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a concise manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills, including an ability to perform under pressure and manage multiple priorities with competing demands for resources.
  • Understanding of software development methodologies and best practices.
  • Understanding of relevant tools and platforms (e.g. cloud platforms, web technologies, client-server technologies, continuous integration pipelines) with an eagerness to learn about new and unfamiliar technologies.
  • Adaptability and ability to manage rapid change in business needs, processes, or technologies.
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in managing talent.
  • Experience managing a team of at least 10 employees.
  • Background in the energy industry, ISO/RTO or large utility background preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common professional, scientific and/or technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from staff, management, customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write presentations and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORK ENVIRONMENT
