Position Description

General Summary:


The Data Network Technician for Peñasco Valley Telephone Cooperative, Inc. and its subsidiaries designs, monitors and troubleshoots equipment and servers associated with the Internet, voice, and data networks to determine network stability, security, traffic loads and potential outages; responsible for IP addressing and network documentation.


Essential Job Functions:


  • Builds and maintains data networks.

 

  • Monitors the ISP network and all associated equipment to determine network stability, traffic throughput, link outages, and all other events that are detrimental to customer service.

 

  • Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and cabling.

 

  • Evaluates and tests network and protocol related functions and processes.

 

  • Provides technical software and hardware design, installation, implementation, and support to customers and their networks.

 

  • Works with other communications companies’ teams to provide solutions for PVT’s technology requirements.

 

  • Investigates, designs, plans, and implements physical and logical IP networks.

 

  • Prepares documents to define and illustrate network design solutions.

 

  • Creates method of procedures (MOP) for implementation to configure network hardware and software.

 

  • Performs router/switch network hardware/software upgrades.

 

  • Performs server hardware/software upgrades.

 

  • Understands virtual server environments and must be able to install/maintain/upgrade associated hardware/software in such environments.

 

  • Researches, recommends, installs, and maintains software applications to support automation efficiencies in system management & reporting functions.

 

  • Supports network protocols including but not limited to TCP, IP, UDP, BGP, OSPF, and HSRP.

 

  • Proactively stays current with, recommends, and implements security best practices.

 

  • Attends training sessions on new products and technology to maintain a high degree of knowledge and competence.

 

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with customers and personnel.

 

  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams for projects & services.

 

  • Author useful documentation for internal peers and external partners.

 

  • Uses safety equipment; utilizes safety practices; attends and participates in designated cooperative safety and training meetings; abides by the company’s safety manual.

 

  • Places a premium on customer satisfaction; and makes every attempt to perpetuate PVT’s and its subsidiaries’ positive image in all subscriber customer-related service activities.

 

  • Completes other projects and activities as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


Position requires advanced and diverse knowledge in technology, to include design and implementation in broad range of technologies for WAN, LAN, WLAN, and data security; skills and knowledge to perform complex engineering on network and server environments including but not limited to Linux and Microsoft server platforms; requires independent thinking; demands full use and application of principles, theories, and concepts in IP technologies. Strong customer interfacing background, as well as oral and written communication skills; must be able to work independently and in a team environment; must be able to work on multiple projects/activities concurrently; disciplined and oriented in practice of and adherence to process and procedures; sound analytical and troubleshooting skills; strong interpersonal skills.  Must be able to write scripts to automate tasks and extract data for analysis, must be able to organize work in an efficient manner.


Education and/or Experience:


High School diploma or GED. Associate’s degree or higher in Network Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field (preferred). Minimum of two years’ experience in a network engineering role or equivalent, CCNA or demonstrated equivalent knowledge, must be familiar with network and server security and platforms. Knowledgeable in virtual server environments including VMWare hypervisor and SAN storage.

 

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:


Must have, or be able to obtain, and maintain a valid New Mexico state driver’s license, have an excellent driving record and be insurable under the Company’s insurance policy.


Other Qualifications and/or Credentials:


Cisco Networking, VMware, Linux, Microsoft, and similar certifications or equivalent work experience preferred.

Working Conditions:

 

Usually good working conditions. Climate controlled building with adequate lighting and space. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure to elements such as noise, dust, cold/heat, and traffic or interruptions. Some elements present which make conditions less desirable than usually found in an office. The normal noise level is quiet in the office environment and may be moderate to loud in outside conditions.
