THE OPPORTUNITY:

This position is responsible for implementing local strategic public relations strategies and working with Community Engagement team and with volunteers to curate and elevate stories that represent our larger mission and brand and place stories in local communities and drive awareness for PanCAN, its public awareness initiatives and all research, clinical programs and Patient Services. Position will also be responsible for cultivating meaningful relationships in key markets with local press and having a regular cadence of communication.


This role reports to the Associate Director of Public Relations.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


● Identify local story angles for national PanCAN programs and initiatives that position the organization and its local affiliates as thought leaders in their community.

● Collaborate with Community Engagement department to stay informed about local influencers and local affiliate activities including fundraising events, advocacy and survivor and caregiver stories that may be press opportunities.

● Work with Community Engagement department to ensure local volunteer affiliates are trained in media and influencer outreach.

● Develop local templates media materials including pitches, press releases, talking points, PSA scripts, etc. for local volunteer affiliates to place in their local communities.

● Develop local year-round pitching opportunities based on national PR strategy and create template pitches and releases for local volunteer affiliates.

● Develop and deepen relationships with online, broadcast and print reporters, editorial writers, columnists and freelancers in key top markets and work with local affiliates to pitch and place stories to increase awareness of PanCAN and its key priorities and initiatives.

● Create and maintain comprehensive media contacts lists annually for all local affiliates

● Respond to local media inquiries and coordinate with interviews with affiliates as needed.

● Monitor and track all media hits and maintain and share records of press coverage.

● Work with local affiliates to build influencer outreach list, develop influencer relationships and work with influencers to help amplify PanCAN’s programs and initiative in partnership with social media team.


QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: The following are the minimum qualifications which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.


● BA/BS degree in public relations, media or communications preferred.

● 3 years minimum experience in consumer brand, healthcare, or nonprofit public relations is highly desired.

● Experience writing, pitching and placing stories with local media especially in major markets.

● Relationships with local media in major markets a plus.

● Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment, with multiple and changing priorities while maintaining strong attention to detail.

● Strong interpersonal and team player skills with an ability to communicate at all levels of an organization both internally and externally.

● Proven written and verbal communication skills, as well as exceptional organizational skills.
