Who We Are & What We Do 

The Fund for Advancement of Minorities through Education (FAME) is a non-profit organization, making a large impact on the lives of students of color in the Greater Pittsburgh area. FAME was established over 30 years ago to provide need-based scholarships to bright and talented African American students, making a high-quality independent school education possible. FAME also provides its Scholars with an array of supplemental support including tutoring, internships, academic enrichment programs, leadership development, and career awareness workshops. In addition, FAME hosts a summer and Saturday preparatory program for middle school students interested in attending an independent school.

We are a collaborative group of educators committed to being change agents for educational equity.


What We’re Looking For

As part of the mission to build a black educator pipeline in Western Pennsylvania, we are seeking aspiring educators looking for an opportunity to gain classroom experience and professional development. FAME Fellows will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum provided via an 8-week summer mentorship program designed by a cohort of educational advisors to provide undergraduate education students with valuable in-classroom teaching experience to prepare them for high demand teaching roles.


What You Will Do


Governance

  • Reports to and works with the Director of the FAME Teachers’ Academy
  • Works with assigned mentor to develop as a practitioner
  • Works with cooperating teacher to develop as a practitioner


Fellowship Responsibilities

  • The 2024 FAME Fellows Program will take place from June 5th, 2024, through July 31st, 2024. Fellows are expected to be available for the extent of the program, including the week of June 5-14, 2024 which is dedicated to training.
  • Fellow will teach or co-teach at the FAME Academy or at a FAME Partner School during the summer of 2024.
  • Fellow will participate in weekly meetings with mentor, cooperating teacher and Director of FAME Academy.
  • Fellow will be responsible for designing and implementing lessons at the FAME Academy or assigned site as assigned by cooperating teacher.
  • Fellow will be responsible for reading the assigned book and attending weekly study group meetings.
  • Fellow will be responsible for grading student work and assigning grades in collaboration with cooperating teacher.
  • Fellows will participate in monthly meeting with mentor and Director during the school year


Qualifications

  • Current enrollment at an accredited college/university
  • 3.0+ GPA Preferred
  • 2+ years’ experience working with children in an urban setting strongly preferred
  • Pennsylvania Department of Education clearances Act 34 (Criminal), Act 151 (Child Abuse), FBI Criminal History and negative TB test
  • Passion for working with young people
  • 2 recommendations required (recommendations from a dean or current administrator preferred)
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and the availability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings.


Compensation and Benefits

  • Housing will be provided if needed
  • Fellows receive a per diem for food and a transportation stipend
  • $3000 - $5000 stipend - the stipend will vary based on responsibilities at the academy
