Job Description

Role: Energy Data Scientist

About Rhythmos

Rhythmos develops advanced technology that optimizes the electric mobility ecosystem, enabling the transition to a decarbonized power grid based on distributed energy resources as primary service providers. The Rhythmos Cadency Edge AI platform uses advanced machine learning and data analytics to optimize grid performance, considering EV fleet owner operational requirements, existing utility tariffs and rates, electric utility infrastructure capacity and grid constraints, wholesale energy market pricing, and more. By approaching optimization from this end-to-end ecosystem perspective, the Rhythmos platform extracts the dormant value for all participants in the energy ecosystem, something traditional point solutions cannot identify and capture. Based in Boulder, CO, Rhythmos is at the forefront of solving a $2.1 trillion problem and facilitating a rapid and cost-efficient transition from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy and decarbonized transportation.

Job Summary

The Energy Data Scientist is responsible for the development, maintenance, and advancement of analytics algorithms that form the core of Rhythmos’ Cadency Edge AI platform. This platform fuses modern AI/ML, optimization, and other analytics with a deep understanding of power systems focused on the challenges of optimally managing electric vehicles and other behind-the-meter distributed energy resources.

As an Energy Data Scientist, you will work closely with product, software development, and other data scientists to develop and deliver multi-disciplinary solutions to address electric vehicle adoption. As a contributor in a startup environment, you bring both deep expertise in energy and data science as well as a pragmatic ‘toolbox’ mentality to solve the problem at hand and move the business forward in incremental and systematic steps. Examples include algorithms that can help detect EV’s using smart meter data, forecast customer load, and create optimized EV schedules.

At Rhythmos, we understand that solving multi-disciplinary problems requires building multi-disciplinary teams. This role sits in between the domains of software, AI/ML, “classical optimization”, advanced analytics, and energy and power systems. Successful candidates may come from either an energy or a data science background. We look forward to hearing how you can help us bridge these worlds.

Key Responsibilities

The Energy Data Scientist works closely with the product and software teams to develop, mature, and productize analytics. This requires working with large amounts of energy data that can be used to support both research and production. This includes both AI/ML as well as “classical optimization” (as in control variables, constraints, and objectives). As you develop data-driven techniques that help detect, forecast, optimize, and manage electric vehicles, you will work closely with the team to move these through to production. You will own the maintenance, upgrade and observation of both AI/ML and optimization models from an end-to-end perspective.

In addition to having a deep understanding of how to develop these kinds of algorithms from the ground up, you possess a holistic understanding of what it takes to operationalize advanced algorithms for both near-real time and real-time use cases. You will work closely with industry thought leaders with decades of experience in this space who can help ensure that you are solving the right problems, in the right way, at the right time.

You will:

  • Develop, maintain, test, and evolve analytical models and algorithms by fusing the worlds of data science and energy (includes AI/ML, optimization, and other analytics).
  • Work closely with product management to ensure development aligns with broader product strategy as well as provide key input into the analytics roadmap.
  • Work in conjunction with data engineering and software development teams to maintain and extend the data warehouse that can support the development of both prototypical and production-grade analytics and algorithms.
  • Provide both internal and external analysis to aid in both commercial project delivery and internal product development.
  • Embrace principles of both modern software development and modern data science.
  • Write, contribute, and document, embracing a spirit of continuous improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • MSc in energy/power systems or an MSc in data science/statistics or similar
  • Three years of experience applying analytics and data science principles in energy
  • Knowledge of two of the following three categories:
    • Energy and power systems analytics
    • Advanced AI/ML techniques
    • DER Optimization technologies (e.g. GAMS, AMPL, Pyomo)
  • Solid skills in programming with big data
  • 3+ years of Python experience and the scientific stack (pandas, numpy, scipy)
  • Experience in the utility or electric vehicle space is a plus
