DEPARTMENT/PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD or Clubs) CHANGES LIVES through quality programs and guidance in a safe, affordable and fun environment. BGCGSD’s mission is to inspire and enable youth to achieve academic success, build good character and responsible citizenship and make healthy lifestyle choices. We have been providing a safe, fun, and positive environment at our sites with trained and dedicated professional staff for over 80 years. Members are involved in age-appropriate activities based upon our three priority outcomes of Academic Success, Character Development, and Healthy Lifestyles.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the direction of the Transportation Management Team, the School Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. The Driver must ensure that the school bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students as per the schedule, maintain order and security on the bus and adhere to all laws, regulations, and rules of conduct. The Driver must also interact with BGCGSD members, parents, staff, and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of service. The Driver must make note of and report any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner.

  1. Transport children, parents, and staff by driving a school bus or passenger van to and from school, and to and from special outings or field trips while adhering to driving rules and regulations for providing a safe vehicle in the State of California.
  2. Maintain safety of BGCGSD fleet of vehicles by observing visual defects and checking operations systems routinely.
  3. Maintain good communications with the Clubs administration; checking in with the transportation Coordinator daily.
  4. Serve as a positive role model and example for BGCGSD members through appropriate dress, speech, attitude, and courtesies. Maintain consistent, punctual, and regular attendance.
  5. Transport Clubs members by picking them up at assigned stops; instructing when it is safe to board the vehicle; take attendance; establish loading and unloading procedures, and the importance of adhering to all safety rules.
  6. The Driver must also interact with BGCGSD members, parents, staff, and members of the public in a professional manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of service.
  7. The Driver must make note of and report any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner.

2. SAFETY

  1. Be aware of current safety protocols that are being adhered to: adults and children are wearing face coverings, social distancing, frequent hand washing, etc.
  2. Enforce transportation seating guidelines outlined by BGCGSD and the State of California, ensuring adequate spacing between passengers. (depending on the current guidelines)
  3. Conduct daily health, wellness checks & temperature screenings on all members as outlined in current guidelines.
  4. Be adamant about safe conditions while traveling by enforcing safety and discipline rules and following all vehicle and driving laws as outlined by BGCGSD and the State of California.
  5. Implement emergency plan in the event of an accident; appropriately administer to the needs of the members on-board, administer first-aid, and complete accident report and documentation.
  6. Actively continue to complete annual classroom and behind-the-wheel bus driver instruction to meet all California state licensing requirements for valid CA School Bus Driver Certificates.

3. MAINTENANCE

  1. Complete daily all pre-and post-inspections for safety and security by documenting in BGCGSD vehicle logs prior to locking the vehicle and completing daily shift.
  2. Assist with transporting vehicles for regularly scheduled maintenance as requested by the Transportation Coordinator.
  3. Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of the vehicle.
  4. Maintains fluid levels (oil, water, and fuel), check tire pressure, and signs of body damage. Advise the Transportation Coordinator of any requirements for maintenance or repairs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be 18 years of age with a High School diploma or GED (Required)
  2. Must have three (3) years of relevant driving experience. (Required)
  3. Possession of a valid California Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL) or CDL (Class B) license with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements, and Air Brake Endorsement. (Required)
  4. Possess First Aid and CPR Certification, or ability to provide within 30 days of hire. (Required)
  5. Verification of safe driving record satisfied by submitting a Department of Motor Vehicles Driver’s H6 printout. (Required)
  6. Ability to operate school bus in a safe and responsible manner adhering to scheduling systems; reading and following route sheets; complying with established guidelines. (Required)
  7. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify issues and create action plans. (Required)
  8. Monitors members and other passengers during transit; maintain discipline as needed for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all passengers. (Required)
  9. Strong oral and written command of the English language with basic math and writing skills to complete maintenance reports and vehicle logs. (Required)
  10. Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate in a professional manner. Able to work with a diverse population at all levels of the organization. (Required)
  11. Competent with rules and regulations of the road; and safety practices and procedures. (Required)
  12. Experienced school bus, or heavy-duty vehicle driver. (Preferred)

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • Child Development drivers must provide verification of influenza, pertussis, and measles immunizations
  • Valid California Commercial Driver's License (CDL) OR CDL (Class B) license
  • Passenger, School Bus and Air Brake Endorsements; Special School Bus Certificate
  • DOT Medical Examiners Certificate and First Aid Certificate
