BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title: Teacher (Career Bound)
Department/Location: Programming
Reports to: Career Bound Manager
Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:
The Academic and Career Coach is responsible for working as part of the Career Bound team in the delivery of the Career Bound program, which assists teens with identifying career goals, tutoring to improving academic performance, acquiring skills needed to submit competitive applications to post-secondary, degree-granting institutions, acquiring workforce readiness skills, acceptance to accredited trade industry programs and obtaining gainful employment at Boys & Girls Clubs, which includes intensive job training and coaching. As a result, Career Bound equips members with the knowledge, skills, academic success, personal attributes, and experience required to be career ready.

Key Roles (Essential Responsibilities):

  • Serve as part of a team that will implement the Career Bound program at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, including youth recruitment and retention.
  • Work directly with youth to develop and implement a Personalized Career Plan that will guide academic remediation, as needed, course selection, ACT/SAT preparation, and essay writing instruction, and provide coaching based on the career interests and current academic standing of each youth.
  • Creates intervention strategies and systems for implementation for members to increase academic achievement.
  • Tutoring support to identify gaps in academic success and skill sets to create supplemental resources to support academic achievement
  • Academic coaching to enhance student/member and teacher partnership, student/member advocacy, and student/member academic data tracking.
  • Conduct planning sessions with youth and their parent/guardian to foster an awareness of the financial advantages of a college credential, realities of college tuition, and scholarship options.
  • Identify best sources for no-or low-cost assistance with post-secondary tuition, including assisting members and their families with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Participate in ensuring that the Career Bound Manager and Teen Specialist have a working knowledge of all aspects of the Career Bound program and establish a referral system for these staff to refer members in need of coaching.
  • Present Introduction to College Applications and FAFSA Workshops for teens and their parent/guardian.
  • Track scholarship opportunities and assist members with submitting competitive applications.
  • Assist with editing scholarship and application essays.
  • Assist the Career Bound Manager with arranging College Tours and serve as chaperone of tours, including those that are conducted over multiple days.
  • Work with the Palm Beach County School District to expedite collection of report cards at the end of grading periods.
  • Maintain a system of internal evaluation including individual student records, report card grades, attendance, and progress. Monitor outcome data to ensure programmatic strategies are appropriate and effective. Produce impact reports on an on-going basis.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Together with the team, develop training opportunities for parents and students.
  • Assist with school projects, reports and exam preparations.
  • Assist youth with resume writing, job searches, and job applications.
  • Collaborate with community partners and service providers.
  • Complete counseling and/or advising referrals.
  • Support and monitor student engagement in activities (e.g. Study Island, OnTrack, Flocabulary, etc.).
  • Write and assist with recommendation letters.
  • Assist students with business plan development and FL business registration.
  • Chaperone youth during college and business tours.
  • Help students identify volunteer service and extended learning opportunities.
  • Participate in student and parent and conferences.
  • Provide direct mentoring and assist with mentoring referrals and matches.
  • Assist youth with writing speeches; coach youth during speech rehearsals.
  • Together with the Career Bound team and Club staff, assist with the Youth of the Year Program.

Relationships:

  • Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with volunteers, staff and supervisor to receive/provide information and discuss issues.
  • External: Maintain contact and build relationships with community groups, schools external staff and volunteers to assist in resolving challenges

Skills & Knowledge Required:

  • BA/BS Degree from an accredited, four-year university or college in a field related to education.
  • Possession of Florida Teaching Certificate or Certification in Guidance and Counseling (Grades PK-12) desired.
  • Knowledge of Palm Beach County high school education system and related resources.
  • Strong knowledge of post-secondary education application process.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and implement programs.
  • Understanding of and commitment to outcome measurement.
  • Experience working with at-risk youth.
  • Strong personal commitment to BGCPBC’s mission and vision.
  • Energetic collaborator skilled in building and facilitating relationships with BGCPBC staff, external community groups, schools, members' parents/guardians, and others to assist in mission advancement.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong analytical skills, with attention to detail.
