Position Overview

You, like us, pursued veterinary medicine because of a passion for helping pets and their people. The mobile clinic is an essential part of the Arizona Humane Society. As part of organization's public clinics, it provides low-cost veterinary care within the community. These services include wellness exams, vaccines, preventatives, diagnostics, spay/neuter and general medical appointments. Providing these services within the community increases the availability of veterinary care, protects the pets from spreading disease and is a key piece in one-health.

HTMC focuses providing care to those that otherwise do not have access. Events are held in the Phoenix area as well as on native lands around the state. The schedule is a 4-day workweek, and requires travel in and outside of the Phoenix Metro-area. Occasionally, trips may require the team to be out of town for up to seven days, depending on the location.


Essential Functions


Mobile Clinic -

  • Mobile team members are front-line ambassadors for AHS. Team members must be able to work well with others and have compassion for the work we do in the community.
  • Evaluate animals brought in for appointments. Perform physical exams; determine appropriate diagnostics, and treatment, keeping spectrum of care in mind.
  • Communicate patient's needs and treatments with clients.
  • Be familiar with HQHVSN techniques and be comfortable performing 30-40 surgeries a day in various settings.
  • Be familiar with other types of surgeries, including amputations, gastrotomy, cystotomy, wound care, enucleations etc.
  • Be comfortable working in various conditions, including heat and cold.
  • Mentor veterinary externs as they rotate through the various clinics of AHS.
  • Be willing to work in other AHS clinics as the need arises.
  • Be able to drive the Mobile unit to locations as needed.

Administrative -

  • Maintain all medical records using computer based medical notes.
  • Monitor, dispense and log controlled substances according to standards established by the DEA.
  • Be the mentor by teaching staff, volunteers and externs.
  • Advise VP of Animal Welfare and Medical Services of clinic activities and recommend possible changes to upgrade the services.
  • Attend seminars to satisfy continuing education requirements for Arizona D.V.M. license renewal.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Education / Certifications / Licenses:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine OR Veterinary Medical Doctor Degree and licensed to practice in Arizona.
  • One year of experience in a veterinary practice with emphasis on surgery skills/ spectrum of care.
  • Must possess above average surgery skills and a humane attitude towards animals and people.
  • Good communications skills are necessary.
  • Knowledge/ experience in Community Medicine and focus on Access to Care a plus.

Experience:


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

Language - Able to speak, read, write and understand English.

Mathematical - Basic

Technical - Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Explorer; able to learn other software programs as necessary. Proficiency with or able to learn/use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment).


Other:

Regular attendance, punctuality and access to reliable transportation required.

Work Environment / Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
