This hospital is a 100+ bed not-for-profit community hospital in Northern North Carolina. It is accredited by The Joint Commission and has received the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.
Responsibilities
- The Laboratory Director is tasked with overseeing the daily operations and administration of a high-complexity laboratory, ensuring its financial performance, and timely, reliable, and clinically relevant test results are in compliance with applicable regulations and accreditation requirements.
- Set up and develop department objectives, performance standards, policies, and procedures per administrative requirements to ensure high-quality laboratory services for the organization's patients and clinicians.
- Implement and maintain the College of American Pathologists' standards, ensuring all lab processes comply with CAP guidelines and CLIA regulations, with thorough interim self-inspections and timely corrections or any deficiencies.
- Oversee budget preparation and review financial performance. Manage the selection of laboratory equipment, testing methodologies, supplies, and services to enhance the lab's quality.
- Monitor workflow and staffing levels to ensure adequate personnel with the necessary qualifications and competency to meet laboratory needs.
- Provide education programs, strategic planning, research, and development suited to the lab and organization's needs.
- Manage the training of students, new hires, and other employees, administer competency assessments and remedial training as required, and oversee staff performance evaluation.
- Offer intra-laboratory consultations and clinical consultations on test selection and the clinical implications of lab data. Provide advice to Administration regarding proposed procedural changes related to patient care.
- Ensure resolution of technical problems, remedial actions are taken and documented, and patient results are not reported until corrective actions are completed and test systems function correctly.
- Participate in designing, implementing and supervising a quality management program for all test performance aspects in the lab, including pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing.
- Review all quality assurance data/documentation and daily results, and prepare monthly, quarterly, and/or annual reports.
- Ensure proper communication of laboratory data and patient result reporting.
- Implement a safe laboratory environment in compliance with good practice, OSHA, and other relevant safety regulations.
- Engage in continuing education programs consistent with Granville Health System and certification agency requirements, and participate in educational conferences to update professional knowledge and skills.
- Liaise with agencies such as national, state, and local health departments for laboratory-related matters.
- Oversee performance management, fiscal management, supply and equipment management, department-specific staff development and education, customer service, and foster partnerships with the healthcare team, including physicians.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science/medical technology with at least 4 years of supervisory experience/training in high complexity laboratory
- Master’s Degree in medical laboratory science, or related science preferred
- Certification as a CLS, MLS, MT, or MLT is required
