Job Summary
The Counseling and Prevention Department at Harris-Stowe State University seeks qualified applicants for a part-time licensed or license-eligible Mental Health Counselor position. The position requires 15-20 in-person hours per week with no more than 999 hours worked for the year. The Mental Health Counselor will provide mental health services to the college student population, including individual therapy sessions, group therapy, couples therapy, crisis intervention, outreach, educational workshops, and consultation with faculty, administration, and parents. This is a 10-month position (August through May) with some flexibility in scheduling throughout the week.
Essential Functions
- Conduct initial Intake Interviews with students and craft appropriate treatment plans; when a referral to an outside agency/mental health provider is appropriate, facilitate the referral process as needed
- Provide brief, solution-focused individual therapy to students
- Provide group therapy – type of group to be decided based on student needs as well as counselor’s areas of interest
- Provide crisis intervention for “walk-in” students as needed, including assessing for suicidal ideation
- Participate in weekly individual supervision as well as monthly case conference/ seminar training when available
- Attend and participate in Counseling and Prevention Center-sponsored student events and outreach events (e.g., monthly workshops promoting student wellness).
- Serve as a member of the Counseling and Wellness team and work collaboratively with the Counseling and Prevention Center Director
- Represent as a professional liaison of Harris-Stowe State University when required
- Serve as liaison between outside agencies/legal authorities and referral sources for student care
Minimum Education and Experience
- Master’s Degree in Mental Health field (e.g., LCSW, LPC, LMFT, LMHC)
- Experience in providing individual psychotherapy
- Ability to utilize telehealth tools and computer applications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Licensed to practice in the State of Missouri
- Experience in providing mental services to an emerging adult student population
- Experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and/or Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Physical Requirements
- May be susceptible to eyestrain, back discomfort, and hand/wrist problems due to long periods working on a computer.
- Occasional stress may occur from volume and deadlines.
- Demands normal manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity.
- May be some walking, standing, bending, or carrying of light items.
- Occasional evening and weekend work during peak season.
